After the Hike: Recovery, Lessons & What to Do Next
Post-trail recovery and lessons — first 48 hours, packing retrospectives, recovery towns Lee actually used, and links to plan your next hut trek.

The finish-line photo is not the end of the trip. Knees swell, boots stink, laundry piles up and your brain starts asking "would I do that again — and what next?" This hub collects recovery habits and lessons Lee actually wrote after multi-day treks, plus links to plan the next route while the memory is fresh.

First 48 hours — recovery basics
These are boring on purpose. They matter more after a hut week than on a day hike.
| Priority | What helps |
|---|---|
| Feet | Air boots out, treat hotspots before they blister again, elevate if swollen |
| Hydration & food | Salt and calories you skipped on the last col — easy to under-eat when tired |
| Sleep | First night off-trail often sleeps badly; don't plan a drive-alpine-col the next morning |
| Gear | Dry tent/sleep kit, wipe pack straps, repack so mould doesn't win |
| Joints | Light walk or stretch — not "prove I'm fine" heroics |
On TMB we booked hotel nights in Chamonix with sauna time. On Skye I bought a knee brace in Portree — wish it had been in the pack on day one. On Bernina basic SAC huts meant recovery without showers — plan a town night after if that matters to you.
Lessons worth rereading
The embed above links to post-trail sections inside trek guides — not separate trip reports. That is deliberate: lessons sit next to the planning context you will need when you book again.
Patterns I keep seeing:
- Underestimate descent load — AV1 and Skye punished knees more than ascent (AV1 difficulty, Skye packing)
- Recovery towns are part of the itinerary — Bern, Chamonix, Portree, Belluno (Bern guide, AV1 complete guide)
- Pack weight regrets show up on day four — see Boesmanskloof packing for an honest "leave behind" list
- Weather windows beat summit ego — Fimmvörðuháls and Laugavegur both taught that the hard way
Gear reset between trips
Before you stash the pack in the loft:
- Clean and dry boots, insoles and rain shell — store laces loose
- Audit consumables — blister tape, sunscreen, gas canisters
- Note one change for next time (half-page in your phone notes beats forgetting)
- Cross-check hiking essentials and the relevant packing list builder when you pick the next trek
Turn hindsight into the next booking
Post-trail clarity is the best time to choose the next route honestly:
- Felt crushed by distance but loved huts? → shorter week on the beginner ladder before TMB
- Loved Dolomites but hated crowds? → Bernina vs AV1
- Ready for capstone energy? → AV1 vs TMB then when to book
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers on fit, features, and buying — open a question to read more.
At least one easy day before long drives or desk marathons. After TMB or Bernina, I wanted two — cumulative load lingers even when daily distances felt fine on trail.
Scroll the complete guides linked in the embed — look for tips, what I wish I'd known and lessons headings near the end. This hub is the index; the trek guides hold the detail.
Note preferences while fresh (loved huts vs camping, heat vs cols), but sleep on big bookings. Use Trek Finder and when to hike once you are home and honest about fitness.
Stop heroics. Rest, ice and professional assessment beat pushing the next stage. Skye taught me that buying a brace in town is fine — packing one is better.
