Skye Trail Packing List
What to pack for the Skye Trail — wild camping kit, waterproof layers, navigation tools and gear for an unmarked 128 km Isle of Skye traverse.

Self-guided

The Skye Trail is not a hut trek — you carry shelter, sleep system, food and navigation for ~128 km of largely unmarked coastal and highland walking. Mud, wind, midges and a 27 km ridge day will test every item in your pack.
This Skye Trail packing list is built from my self-guided hike: what worked, what failed (heavy pack, knee brace bought on trail), and what I'd pack differently.

Packing rules for Skye
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Full wild-camp kit | No refuges — tent, bag, mat, stove |
| Waterproof everything | Four seasons in one day is normal |
| Navigation backup | Trail is unmarked — phone + paper map |
| Midge defence | Repellent + head net when wind drops |
| Dry socks × 3+ | Boggy ground destroys feet |
| Pack light | 27.5 km / 1,630 m days with full camp load |
Backpack
Multi-day wild camping with food and wet gear needs 50–65 L unless you're ruthlessly ultralight. I was too heavy (camera, drone, book) — aim lighter than I did.
- Pack rain cover or liner
- Dry bags for sleep kit and electronics
- External pocket for map / snacks
Shelter & sleep
Skye will test your tent — ridge wind night (Day 2) and valley storm (Day 4) both hammered mine.
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| 3-season tent | Windproof pitch; extra pegs (I bought more in Portree) |
| Sleeping bag | Rated for damp, cool Scottish nights |
| Sleeping mat | Insulation from cold, wet ground |
| Bivy bag (optional) | Emergency shelter on exposed ridge |
Clothing & waterproofs
- Waterproof jacket and trousers — non-negotiable
- Moisture-wicking base layers (no cotton)
- Fleece or light insulated layer
- Hiking trousers + shorts option
- Warm hat + thin gloves for ridge mist
- Gaiters — worth the weight for bog sections
Footwear
- Waterproof hiking boots — broken in; bog will swallow trainers
- 3–4 pairs merino hiking socks
- Blister kit + knee brace (I bought one in Portree — wish I'd packed it)

Trekking poles & navigation
Poles helped on long descents and supported my tent in a storm (seriously).
Unmarked route essentials:
- Phone with AllTrails GPX downloaded offline
- Paper map + compass backup
- Power bank (cold + GPS drains fast)
See navigation guide.
Camp kitchen & food carry
- Compact stove + fuel (isobutane widely available in Portree)
- Pot, spork, lighter
- 5–6 days food or resupply plan (Portree, Sligachan, Elgol)
- Water bottles 2–3 L capacity — long dry sections on Day 2
Midges & comfort
- Midge repellent (Smidge or similar)
- Head net — looks silly, saves sanity
- Headlamp
- Earplugs for hostels
- Quick-dry towel
- Toilet trowel + bags (Leave No Trace wild camping)
Electronics & extras
- Phone, camera — be ruthless on weight
- Drone optional (Day 2 ridge was magic — also read Best Hiking Drones)
- First aid: painkillers, blister care, rehydration salts
- Whistle, emergency blanket
What NOT to bring
| Skip | Why |
|---|---|
| Hut liner only | You're camping |
| Heavy cotton | Never dries in mist |
| Single pair socks | Bog guarantee |
| Assume marked trail | Navigation kit mandatory |
| Hardcover book | Ask me how I know |
