Iceland
Remote, roadless wilderness hiking in Iceland’s Hornstrandir Nature Reserve — camping, weather and self-sufficiency required.
Hiked by Lee
Self-guided
Overview
Hornstrandir is northwest Iceland’s roadless nature reserve — steep cliffs, fjords, sparse trails and a reputation for solitude and Arctic foxes. There isn’t one single “official” thru-hike distance; hikers build routes between boat landings and camping spots.
Lee’s published trip was a self-supported ~5-day itinerary. Longer full-circuit options in the guide run closer to 7–10 days. Expect unmarked or lightly marked walking, serious weather exposure, and the need to carry camping and food — this is not hut-to-hut Europe.
Read the complete guide before you book boats or pack. If you’re comparing Hornstrandir with hut-supported Iceland routes like Laugavegur, use Trek Comparison to keep expectations honest.
