Packing rules for Hornstrandir
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Windproof tent | Gusts at Hornvík and open camps are brutal |
| Cold-rated sleeping bag | Summer nights still drop hard |
| Trekking poles | Snow patches, river wades, steep descents |
| Offline GPS | No trail markers; fog kills visibility |
| Carry all food | Zero resupply on the peninsula |
| Water filter | Rivers are your source — purify everything |
Backpack
55–65 L for 5 days food plus full camping kit. Expect 12–15 kg loaded — train with this weight.
Footwear
Waterproof boots with ankle support for bog, ice and rocky descents. Gaiters help in mud.
Shelter & sleep

| Sleeping bag | Rated below comfort temps; damp nights are common |
| Sleeping pad | Insulation from cold, wet ground |
| Dry bags | Keep sleep kit dry in pack |
