Iceland's hiking is defined by short summer windows, volcanic highlands and routes that feel remote even when they are famous. I've hiked the Laugavegur hut trek from colourful Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, linked it with the Fimmvörðuháls pass between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, and spent time in the far northwest on Hornstrandir — Arctic fox country with no roads.

Laugavegur & Fimmvörðuháls
Most hikers fly into Reykjavík, take the highland bus to Landmannalaugar and walk hut-to-hut to Þórsmörk. Book Ferðafélag Íslands huts early for July and August — bunks sell out. See the 2027 FI booking calendar for autumn release timing.
The Fimmvörðuháls extension adds a steep, exposed day (or two) over fresh volcanic terrain between the glaciers. It is often hiked immediately after Laugavegur when weather allows; read both trek clusters before you lock dates.

Hornstrandir wilderness
Hornstrandir is a different trip — no huts on the main route, camping, ferry logistics from Ísafjörður and long days in exposed coastal terrain. Wildlife (especially Arctic foxes) and strict leave-no-trace rules make preparation essential.

Practical planning
Pack for wet and windy conditions even on blue-sky mornings. Highland buses run on a short seasonal schedule — build buffer days around weather and ferry times. Travel insurance should cover evacuation in Iceland's highlands.
Use the Trek Finder filtered to Iceland, then open each trek's packing, cost and itinerary guides before you book buses or huts.
