Laugavegur accommodation means FI mountain huts — shared dorms, communal kitchens, wardens with weather updates, and no bedding. Since 2025, huts and campsites must be booked online in advance through Ferðafélag Íslands — no walk-ins.
FI books hut packages north → south only (Landmannalaugar → Þórsmörk). Plan your bus tickets and stage nights to match that direction.

Hut vs camping
| Type | ISK/night | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Major FI hut | ~15,800 | Dorm bunk, kitchen access |
| Smaller hut | 8,400–11,000 | More rustic |
| Campsite (at hut) | ~3,200 | Prepaid booking strongly recommended — 4-season tent required |
No wild camping along the trail. Campsites are only at designated FI hut areas.
FI rules that shape your booking (fi.is FAQ)
These are the three rules hikers miss most often — straight from the FI Laugavegur hut FAQ:
| Rule | What FI says | Planning impact |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Huts are booked north → south only (Landmannalaugar → Þórsmörk) | Match buses, hut packages and your itinerary to this direction — don't plan south-to-north hut chains through FI |
| Electricity | No electricity in any Laugavegur hut — no device charging | Pack a fully charged power bank (FI sells battery packs at some huts, but don't rely on stock) |
| Camping | Advance booking strongly recommended; prepaid camping helps when highland card payments fail | Book campsites in the same FI portal as huts — don't assume walk-up camping |
FI hut system
Each hut typically has:
- Shared dorm bunks (bring sleeping bag — no bedding provided)
- Communal kitchen — stoves, pots, cold water
- Warden with daily weather briefing
- Toilets (flush or outhouse)
- Limited snacks/drinks at some huts (Álftavatn, Þórsmörk)
- No mains electricity for charging phones or cameras
Showers: ~1,000 ISK for 5 minutes at some huts (Emstrur).
Hut stops (4-day route, north → south)
Lee hiked Landmannalaugar toward Þórsmörk — the direction FI uses for hut packages:
| Night | Hut | Lee's notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0 (optional) | Landmannalaugar | Camp or hut at trailhead |
| 1 | Hrafntinnusker | Storm shelter — stove warmth saved the night |
| 2 | Álftavatn | Window bunk, hut restaurant |
| 3 | Emstrur (Botnar) | Paid shower, freeze-dried dinner |
| 4 | Þórsmörk | Langidalur / Volcano Huts area |
Alternatives: Hvanngil instead of Álftavatn (quieter, smaller).
FI online booking (huts + camping)
Per FI hut availability and the FAQ:
- Book on Ferðafélag Íslands (FI) — hut packages, individual huts and individual campsites
- Reservations open January/February for summer — July/August sell out fast
- No walk-ins for huts
- Camping: advance booking strongly recommended; prepaid sites avoid payment issues when connectivity drops in the highlands
- Payment at booking; refund rules are strict — read FI terms before you pay
- Hut packages are north → south — pick your start date at Landmannalaugar and the system fills remaining nights
