Skye Trail Navigation Guide: Maps, GPX & Unmarked Routes

The Skye Trail is unmarked. Unlike TMB or Bernina, there are no red-and-white paint flashes — you follow GPX tracks, maps and occasional faint paths. Fog on the Trotternish Ridge can reduce visibility to metres. Navigation is a core skill, not optional.

Before leaving Inverness / Portree:

• Download full route offline
• Save waypoints: hostels, water, bail-out roads
• Charge phone + power bank fully
• Test GPS app in airplane mode

I used phone GPS daily; paper map as backup when battery dropped.

Garmin or similar for quick bearing check without stopping — useful on ridge in wind. See packing list.

Paper map & compass

Don't rely on phone alone.

• OS Landranger / Explorer sheets for Skye north + south
• Know basic compass bearing — fog on Storr day had hikers lost metres from car park
• Laminate map or waterproof case

When wrapped in cloud, stop → check map → find last known point → backtrack if needed.

Permits & access law

Trekking permit

None for walking the Skye Trail.

Wild camping

Permitted under Scottish Outdoor Access Code when done responsibly:

• Camp away from buildings and roads
• Short stays (2–3 nights max in one spot)
• Remove all waste
• Respect livestock and crops

Bothies

Open shelters — leave clean, no booking, donation appreciated.

Drones

Check local restrictions; respect wildlife (sea eagles, nesting birds).

Weather & route decisions

I started one day early specifically for ridge weather — best navigation decision of the trip.

Bail-out options

Know roads and towns for emergency exit:

• Portree — central hub, medical, shops
• Sligachan — road junction, hotel, buses
• Broadford — south finish, services

Emergency: 999 (UK). Mountain rescue via police.
