Hut-to-Hut Treks by Difficulty: Which Route Fits Your Fitness?
Hut-to-hut treks ranked by difficulty — Laugavegur, Alta Via 1, TMB, Bernina, Otter Trail and bucket-list classics with Lee's first-hand nuance and honest bucket-list labels.

Difficulty ratings lie by omission. A trek labelled moderate can still wreck you if you underestimate heat, cumulative ascent, river holds or CHF hut prices. This page ranks every hut-to-hut route on HikingWithLee into three bands — moderate, challenging and demanding — with the order I would use when advising hikers.
I have walked most routes here first-hand (Laugavegur, Giants Cup, Alta Via 1, TMB, Bernina, Fimmvörðuháls, Otter Trail). Haute Route, Alta Via 2 and Kungsleden are bucket-list research — marked clearly below.
Moderate
First hut weeks and classic European traverses — fitness matters, but no rope skills on standard summer routes.
Lee hiked
4 days · ~55 km · moderate
Laugavegur
Iceland · first hut week
Shortest classic hut week on the site — waymarked, busy in season, serious weather but no alpine exposure.
River crossings and Iceland weather bite harder than the distance suggests.
Lee hiked
5 days · ~60 km · moderate
Giants Cup Trail
South Africa · Drakensberg huts
Gentle rolling grasslands and basic Ezemvelo huts — good multi-day rhythm without European rifugio complexity.
Bucket list
Abisko–Nikkaluokta · ~105 km · moderate
Kungsleden
Sweden · Arctic STF huts
Lower technical grade than Alpine classics — remoteness and self-catered huts, not steep cols.
Lee has not hiked this yet — research snapshot only.
Lee hiked
8 days · ~120 km · moderate
Alta Via 1
Italy · Dolomite rifugi
Officially moderate — rock, heat and long descents make it feel harder day to day than TMB’s headline stats.
Officially moderate — rock and heat often feel harder than TMB’s brochure stats.
Lee hiked
11 days · ~170 km · ~10,000 m ascent
Tour du Mont Blanc
France / Italy / Switzerland
Rated moderate for fitness — cumulative fatigue and three-country logistics push it toward capstone territory.
Often the hardest moderate week if you add variants.
Challenging
Long alpine days, exposure, rivers or coastal stress — often harder than brochure distance alone suggests.
Lee hiked
1–2 days · ~25 km · challenging
Fimmvörðuháls
Iceland · Laugavegur extension
Often one brutal day between waterfalls and lava — exposure and weather, not multi-day hut rhythm.
Lee hiked
5 days · ~42 km · challenging
Otter Trail
South Africa · coastal SANParks huts
Short on paper — cliff paths, river holds and humid coastal load punish knees and logistics.
Lee hiked
7 days · ~135 km · challenging
Bernina Trek
Switzerland · SAC huts
Long uneven stages and glacier cols — quieter than AV1 but bigger days on paper.
Quieter than AV1 but long uneven SAC stages.
Demanding
High cumulative load and remote cols — bucket-list ambition routes; build skills on easier hut treks first.
Bucket list
10–14 days · ~160 km · demanding
Alta Via 2
Italy · wilder Dolomites
Harder sibling to AV1 — remote rifugi, exposure and optional via ferrata.
Lee has not hiked AV2 yet.
Bucket list
12–14 days · ~200 km · demanding
Walker’s Haute Route
France / Switzerland · Chamonix → Zermatt
More elevation and fewer villages than TMB — glacier cols and high hut nights.
Lee has not hiked the Haute Route yet.

How to read these bands
| Band | What it usually means on this site |
|---|---|
| Moderate | Fit hikers with training; no ropes on standard summer routes. Still multi-day fatigue. |
| Challenging | Long days, exposure, rivers or coastal stress — often harder than distance alone suggests. |
| Demanding | High cumulative load, remote cols or bucket-list ambition — not a first hut trek. |
Official trek profiles use the same vocabulary (moderate, challenging, demanding). This page adds editorial order within each band — the sequence I would recommend when choosing your next hut week.
Moderate band — where most hikers should start
Laugavegur is the gentlest first hut week on the list: shorter than European classics, waymarked, and a different hut model (FI sleeping bag + food). Giants Cup is a similar moderate multi-day rhythm in South Africa without alpine exposure.
Alta Via 1 and TMB share the moderate label but stress you differently — AV1 with rock and heat, TMB with length and ~10,000 m ascent. Choosing between them? Read AV1 vs TMB.
Kungsleden (bucket list) sits in moderate on paper — Arctic remoteness and self-catered STF huts are the real variables.
Challenging band — longer days and sharper edges
Bernina is my pick for quiet Swiss SAC huts with big alpine days — rated challenging because stages run long, not because of ropes. Compare crowd and rifugio culture with Bernina vs AV1.
Otter Trail is short on distance but coastal, humid and river-sensitive — challenging for different reasons than the Alps.
Fimmvörðuháls is often a one- or two-day volcanic pass — challenging exposure after Laugavegur, not a full hut week on its own.
Demanding band — bucket-list ambition
Alta Via 2 and the Haute Route are on my bucket list — harder siblings to AV1 and TMB. Treat snapshots as research; verify huts and variants on official sources before booking.
If you want Europe’s toughest benchmark (mixed camping + refuges), see GR20 on the bucket-list hub — not pure hut-to-hut, but the usual “what’s next?” after AV1/TMB.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers on fit, features, and buying — open a question to read more.
Laugavegur — ~55 km over four days, waymarked, with Iceland hut packages. Still serious weather and rivers, but shorter and simpler than AV1 or TMB.
Different stress, similar rating. TMB has more total ascent and days; AV1 felt rockier and hotter day to day. Many hikers find TMB more tiring cumulatively; AV1 more intense per hour in summer. See AV1 vs TMB.
Bernina — noticeably fewer hikers than Dolomite rifugi or the main TMB in Lee’s experience. Still book SAC huts ahead for July–August.
Possible if you are very fit and hut-experienced — but most hikers do better with one moderate hut week first. Use the beginner ladder or pick one moderate route and train stairs + pack weight.
