Tour du Mont Blanc
Alta Via 1 and the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) are the two European hut treks people email me about most. I hiked both self-guided — 8 days on AV1 through the Dolomites and 11 days on the TMB around Mont Blanc.
They look similar on paper (rifugi, red-white markers, summer Alps). On trail they feel different: rock and heat vs cols and three-country logistics, Italian rifugio rhythm vs Chamonix-busy circuit culture.
This page is the choose-between answer. For raw numbers, use the six-row snapshot below (same facts in our Trek Comparison tool). For planning depth, follow the trek-specific guides linked below.
| Factor | Alta Via 1 | Tour du Mont Blanc |
|---|---|---|
| Lee's measured pack (base / loaded) | 3.1 kg base · ~9.5 kg loaded with food + water | 2.3 kg base (partial weigh-in) · target under 7 kg base |
| Actual on-trail spend (Lee) | ~€750–1,180 for 8 days (rifugio half board) | €900–€1,100 pp on the ground (Sep 2024 receipts) |
| Hut booking channel | CAI Prenota Rifugi cart (3/7 nights) + 4 direct hut email/phone/site | montourdumontblanc.com + refuge sites; book Bonatti first |
| Duration (Lee's route) | 8 hiking days · 7 rifugio nights | 11 hiking days · refuges + hotels |
| Distance / ascent | ~120 km · ~6,600–7,000 m gain | ~170 km · ~10,000 m gain |
| Countries / style | Italy only · rifugio hut-to-hut | France, Italy, Switzerland · refuges + hotels |

Quick verdict
| If you want… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Shorter first big hut trek (~8 days, ~120 km) | Alta Via 1 |
| The famous three-country loop (~11 days, ~170 km) | Tour du Mont Blanc |
| Dolomite towers and limestone drama | Alta Via 1 |
| Mont Blanc massif + village comfort (hotels) | TMB |
| Simpler one-country logistics | Alta Via 1 (Italy) |
| Maximum “classic” bragging rights | TMB |
Neither is “easy.” Both reward training, hut bookings and early starts.

How they felt on trail
Alta Via 1 — rock, heat and rifugio rhythm
AV1 is steep and rocky more often than the brochure photos suggest. Long ascents on scree, afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and 30°C heat on exposed cols were my main surprises — not exposure or technical climbing.
The rifugio rhythm is consistent: half board, dorm beds, red-white AV1 markers on good days. Days 6–8 had patchier navigation in forest and rock — worth reading the navigation guide before you assume “fully waymarked everywhere.”
Best moments: Lago di Braies at dawn, high Dolomite ridgelines, Italian hut culture and food.
Hardest moments: Heat on long climbs, knee-heavy descents, basic rifugi nights (no shower, loud dorms).
Tour du Mont Blanc — cols, variants and three-country logistics
The TMB is longer and hillier in total — not necessarily steeper on any single day, but cumulative fatigue hits harder by day 8. You cross France, Italy and Switzerland in one loop; that means different hut systems, languages and price bands (Swiss sector stings).
Flexibility is the TMB superpower: hotels in Courmayeur and Champex, cable cars and buses when weather turns, optional high variants (Robert Blanc, Fenêtre d’Arpette) if you want harder days. It is also busier — queues at ladders, shared dorms booked months ahead.
Best moments: Grand Col Ferret, Italian Val Ferret, finishing back toward Chamonix with Mont Blanc in view.
Hardest moments: Our day 2 variant (12 hours, 2,050 m gain), Swiss prices, storm exposure on Col de Balme.
Scenery and vibe
| Factor | Alta Via 1 | TMB |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | Vertical Dolomite towers, turquoise lakes | Mont Blanc massif, glaciers, three valleys |
| Trail character | Rocky, steep, dramatic close-up peaks | Broader alpine touring, more village contact |
| Crowds | Busy at famous lakes; quieter mid-route | Very busy in peak season on main TMB |
| Culture | Italian rifugio life | Franco-Italiano-Swiss mix |
| “Wow” factor | Limestone spikes | Big-mountain circuit prestige |
Difficulty and fitness
Both are non-technical in summer (no ropes on the standard routes). Fitness matters more than climbing skill.
- AV1 punishes heat, rock underfoot and long descents. Pack light — see difficulty guide.
- TMB punishes total elevation and back-to-back big days. Variants and weather multiply difficulty — see TMB difficulty.
If you live somewhere flat, train stairs and weighted walks for either. Hill training helps more on TMB; heat management matters more on AV1.
Accommodation and logistics
| Alta Via 1 | TMB | |
|---|---|---|
| Nights | Rifugi (mostly dorms) | Refuges + hotels (we used both) |
| Booking | 2–4 months ahead for popular dates | Earlier for August; Swiss huts fill fast |
| Getting there | Venice / Bolzano → Braies — getting there | Geneva / Chamonix hub — getting there |
| Loop vs point-to-point | Southbound traverse | Closed loop to Les Houches |
TMB wins on lodging variety (private hotel nights as recovery). AV1 wins on simpler country-hopping — one main trail, one primary language zone.
Cost (planning ranges)
Use the Trek Cost Calculator for your dates — these are Lee’s published planning bands:
| Alta Via 1 | TMB | |
|---|---|---|
| On-trail budget | ~€750–1,180 (8 days) — cost guide | Higher overall; Swiss nights add up — cost guide |
| Half board | ~€60–85/night rifugio | Refuge half board + hotel splurges |
| Big surprise | Lunch + drinks between huts | Switzerland + cable cars |
TMB is not automatically double AV1 — but most hikers spend more once hotels and Swiss sector are included.
Who should pick which?
Choose Alta Via 1 if you…
- Want a classic Dolomites hut trek without a three-country visa puzzle
- Prefer 8–9 days on trail over 10–11
- Love limestone scenery and Italian rifugio culture
- Are OK with heat and rocky footing more than ladder queues
Choose the Tour du Mont Blanc if you…
- Want the most famous Alpine loop and three-country story
- Like hotel recovery nights mixed with refuges
- Are fine with busier trails and earlier booking pressure
- Want variant options and lift escapes built into the culture
Reconsider both if you…
- Have never done a multi-day hike — build up on Bernina or shorter hut routes first
- Need private rooms every night — both are mostly dorms
- Cannot book months ahead for peak summer
Can you do both?
Yes — and many hikers do AV1 then TMB (or the reverse) in different years. They share hut-to-hut skills: early starts, half board rhythm, light packs, afternoon weather awareness. Gear overlap is high — see trekking backpacks and hiking boots.
If you are choosing one trip this year, match landscape and length to your calendar, not Instagram order.

Similar overall rating (moderate) — but they stress you differently. TMB has more total ascent (~10,000 m vs ~6,500–7,000 m on AV1). AV1 felt rockier and hotter day to day. TMB felt longer and more tiring cumulatively, especially with variants.
Alta Via 1 is usually cheaper for an on-trail week — mostly Italian rifugi. TMB adds Swiss prices, hotel nights and more transport. Compare your scenario in the cost calculators.
Both work for fit first-timers who train and book ahead. AV1 is shorter and logistically simpler (one country). TMB has more support options (hotels, lifts) when you are tired. I would not pick solely on “easier” — pick the scenery you want to live with for a week.
English gets you through both in summer hut season. A few Italian/French phrases help for menus and bus drivers. TMB crosses three countries — more language switching. AV1 is Italy only on the main route.
