Stage highlights

Day 1 — Brutal first climb

Iconic Lago di Braies start, then immediate steep ascent to Forcella Sora Forno. No water until Biella. Book Biella early — not always online.

Alternatives: Skip to Rifugio Sennes or valley Pederü for more comfort (longer Day 1).

Day 2 — Marmots and Fanes

Early start from Biella, detour to Sennes for coffee, long descent to Pederü, then 500 m climb to Fanes — one of the best rifugi on the trail.

Day 3 — Favourite day

Meadows, Forcella del Lago, WWI ruins, optional Lagazuoi detour. Dibona has arguably the best dinner on AV1.

Day 4 — Longest day

Lee started 5:30 AM. Past Averau, Nuvolau optional. Afternoon storms common. Staulanza is road-accessible but welcome after 22 km.

Day 5 — Recovery day

Shorter but steady climb through forest to remote Vazzoler. Cash only, limited water — authentic hut feel.

Day 6 — Navigation test

Rocky, technical terrain. Sparse markers in places. San Sebastiano offers rare private rooms — book ahead.

Day 7 — Into the valley

Long descent toward Pramperet. Plan exit transport before you arrive — signal fades in forest.

Day 8 — Finish line

Sunrise ridges, cold pass, satisfying descent to La Pissa. Bus to Belluno from trail end.
