Alta Via 1 — where to book each rifugio night
Defensible asset — first-hand data, not a generic best-of list
Lee's 7-night route splits 3 CAI cart nights and 4 direct email/phone/site nights. Book the direct nights first — they are the bottlenecks.
| Night | Rifugio | Channel | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rifugio Biella | CAI cart CAI Prenota Rifugi cart or rifugiobiella.it | prenotarifugi.cai.it/ |
| 2 | Rifugio Fanes | Direct Email / request form (rifugiofanes.com) — not on CAI cart | rifugiofanes.com/en/dolomites-hut |
| 3 | Rifugio Dibona | Direct Phone or email (rifugiodibona.it) — not on CAI cart | rifugiodibona.it/ |
| 4 | Rifugio Passo Staulanza | Direct staulanza.it reservation — not on CAI cart | staulanza.it/ |
| 5 | Rifugio Vazzoler | CAI cart CAI cart or rifugiovazzoler.com | prenotarifugi.cai.it/ |
| 6 | Rifugio San Sebastiano | Direct Phone or email (passoduran.it) — not on CAI cart | passoduran.it/ |
| 7 | Rifugio Pramperet | CAI cart CAI cart (Sommariva Pramperét) or hut email | prenotarifugi.cai.it/ |
Alta Via 1 is rifugio-to-rifugio — dorm beds, half board, alpine hospitality. No tent needed. Book early, bring a sleeping bag liner and expect everything from rustic dorms to private rooms with showers.
CAI Prenota Rifugi (prenotarifugi.cai.it) is the Club Alpino Italiano's multi-night booking cart — add each participating hut night, pay once. Many English blogs still say AV1 has no unified booking; prenotarifugi.cai.it changed that for participating rifugi. Not every AV1 rifugio is on the portal — Lee's route still needs four direct bookings (email, phone or the hut's own site).

Accommodation types
| Type | Price (EUR) | When |
|---|---|---|
| Rifugio half board | €60–85/night | Every trail night |
| Pre-trail hotel | €50–120/night | Night before Lago di Braies |
| Post-trail hotel | €50–100/night | Belluno recovery |
| Private rifugio room | +€20–40 | San Sebastiano, some others |
Half board = dinner + breakfast + dorm bed. Lunch and showers often extra.
Before the trail
Most hikers stay near Dobbiaco or Villabassa — morning bus to Lago di Braies.
| Town | Why |
|---|---|
| Dobbiaco | Best transport links, amenities |
| Villabassa | Quieter, charming |
| Cortina d'Ampezzo | More restaurants, transit to trailhead |
| Lago di Braies | At the start — limited and pricey |
Book 2–3 months ahead for July–September.
How to book: CAI cart vs email
CAI Prenota Rifugi (multi-night cart)
The CAI Prenota Rifugi portal lets you:
- Start from the Alta Via 1 Dolomiti itinerary or search individual huts
- Pick dates for each night and add stays to one carrello (cart)
- Pay once for every CAI-listed hut in the cart (how it works)
Lee's 7 nights — where to book
| Night | Rifugio | Booking channel |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Biella | CAI cart or rifugiobiella.it — online opens ~November for the following summer |
| 2 | Fanes | Email / request form on rifugiofanes.com — not on CAI cart |
| 3 | Dibona | Phone or email via rifugiodibona.it — not on CAI cart |
| 4 | Staulanza | staulanza.it own reservation system — not on CAI cart |
| 5 | Vazzoler | CAI cart or rifugiovazzoler.com |
| 6 | San Sebastiano | Phone or email via passoduran.it — not on CAI cart; book private rooms early |
| 7 | Pramperet | CAI cart (listed as Sommariva Pramperét) or email the hut — rifugiosommarivaalpramperet.it |
Practical workflow: book Fanes, Dibona, Staulanza and San Sebastiano first (the email/phone nights) — they are the bottlenecks — then add Biella, Vazzoler and Pramperet through CAI cart where available. Keep every confirmation PDF offline; signal is patchy on trail.
Booking checklist
- Book 2–4 months ahead — Fanes, Dibona, Staulanza fill fast in July–August
- Confirm half board (mezza pensione) — à la carte costs more
- Order packed lunch at dinner for the next day
- CAI cart changes — date moves go through the rifugio by email/phone, not always self-serve in the portal
- Note bail-out points — road-accessible huts for weather exits
Lee's rifugio stops (8 days)
| Night | Rifugio | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Biella | Basic, steep Day 1 reward; CAI cart or rifugiobiella.it |
| 2 | Fanes | Modern, showers included — top pick; request form / email |
| 3 | Dibona | Excellent food; road accessible; phone or email |
| 4 | Passo Staulanza | Road adjacent; luxury after long day; staulanza.it |
| 5 | Vazzoler | Remote, cash only, limited water; CAI cart or hut site |
| 6 | San Sebastiano | Private rooms available; phone or email |
| 7 | Pramperet | Final hut night before descent; CAI cart or email |
