Tour du Mont Blanc Refuges & Accommodation Guide
How to book Tour du Mont Blanc refuges and rifugi — half board, sleeping liners, Bonatti first, and every hut we stayed in on an 11-day self-guided TMB.

Refuge booking is the number one anxiety on the Tour du Mont Blanc — and for good reason. Popular rifugi sell out months ahead, half-board rules vary by country, and one missed bed at Rifugio Bonatti can unravel your whole Italian section.
This guide covers how TMB accommodation works, our booking order, and every place we slept on an 11-day self-guided hike.

Refuge vs rifugio vs hotel
| Type | Where | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Refuge | France | Dorm bunks (6–12 beds), shared washrooms, dinner + breakfast if half board |
| Rifugio | Italy | Same model; often livelier food and wine culture |
| Auberge / refuge | Switzerland | Similar dorms; higher CHF prices |
| Hotel | Chamonix, Courmayeur, Champex | Private room, laundry, recovery — we used 4 hotel nights |
| Refuge tent | Tré-le-Champ | Platform tent near refuge — basic but private |
Half board (demi-pension) = dinner + breakfast included. Lunch is almost always extra or self-catered.
Non-negotiable rules
- Sleeping bag liner required — not a full sleeping bag in summer refuges
- Earplugs — dorm snoring is guaranteed at least once
- Book early — February–April for July–September dates
- Book Rifugio Bonatti first — only rifugio in that Val Ferret section; we lost a night and had to bus back to Courmayeur
- Carry cash — some Swiss huts prefer CHF; cards not always reliable
Booking timeline (what worked for us)
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| 3–6 months ahead | Lock Bonatti, Elisabetta, La Flégère and any must-stay refuges |
| 2–4 months ahead | Fill French refuges (Nant Borrant, Robert Blanc if doing variant) |
| 1–2 months ahead | Hotels in Chamonix, Courmayeur, Champex — more availability but premium dates go fast |
| 1 week before | Confirm bus times; note refuge phone numbers for late arrival |
Official booking portals vary by refuge — many use Montourdumontblanc.com, individual refuge websites, or email. Start with Bonatti’s site, then work backwards from your start date.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers on fit, features, and buying — open a question to read more.
Yes — popular refuges sell out months ahead. Many French refuges list on montourdumontblanc.com; Italian rifugi use their own sites. Rifugio Bonatti is the only hut in that Val Ferret section — if it is full you need a Courmayeur hotel and a day-hike/bus plan (Lee's September hike).

Standout refuges
- Nant Borrant — one of the best on the trail despite a crowded dorm
- Robert Blanc — remote, basic (limited water), incredible position — only in good weather
- Rifugio Elisabetta — fantastic food and atmosphere at the Italian border
- La Flégère — crowded but perfect last refuge night above Chamonix
Where hotels saved the trip
Courmayeur (two nights) — laundry, pizza, private bathroom after Bonatti disappointment.
Champex-Lac — dinner included at Hotel du Glacier; Swiss restaurant prices are brutal without half board.
Dorm etiquette
- Lights out often ~22:00; pack headlamp on red mode
- No boots inside — hut slippers or camp shoes
- Charging points are scarce — one power bank per person minimum
- Dinner is usually a set time — arrive before kitchen cutoff
- Quiet in sleeping dorms — whisper outside if socialising
When refuges are full — backups
| Problem | Our workaround |
|---|---|
| Bonatti full | Day hike from Courmayeur + bus back; extra hotel night |
| Storm on Balme | Ski lift down; tent at la Boërne instead of cramped dorm |
| Variant too risky | Take classic Col du Bonhomme route instead of Robert Blanc |
| La Flégère full | Cable car to Chamonix (many hikers skip final stage) |
Always know the lowest exit to a valley town with a bus — the complete guide lists escape routes per stage.
Camping on the TMB
Campsites exist in some valleys; you carry tent, stove and heavier pack. We only slept under canvas on the refuge tent platform at Tré-le-Champ — colder than a dorm but more privacy.
