The Giants Cup Trail is one of South Africa's best hut-to-hut experiences — five days of rolling Drakensberg grasslands, river valleys and escarpment views without committing to technical climbing.
I completed the standard five-day route. This is a planning guide with hut sequence, logistics and kit notes.
Use the Giants Cup trek overview for quick stats, the Trek Cost Calculator for ZAR budgeting, and the Packing List Builder for kit.

Giants Cup Trail — Quick Facts
| Location | uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, KwaZulu-Natal |
| Distance | ~60 km (standard route) |
| Duration | 5 days / 4 nights |
| Start | Pholela (Giants Castle area) |
| Finish | Bushman's Nek |
| Accommodation | Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife huts (basic; self-catered) |
| Permits | Required — book via Ezemvelo |
| Difficulty | Moderate — long days and hill country |
| Best months | Oct–Apr (avoid snow/ice on high passes in winter) |
| My trip | 5 days |
Important: Weather changes fast in the Berg. Carry waterproofs even on blue-sky mornings, and check pass conditions in winter.
What Makes the Giants Cup Special

Where the Otter Trail hugs the coast, the Giants Cup crosses highland country — golden grass, basalt peaks and wide views toward the escarpment. Highlights include:
- Long ridgeline walking with big sky panoramas
- River crossings and valley descents between huts
- A clear hut-to-hut rhythm — no tent required if you book the standard sequence
- A finish near Bushman's Nek — a classic Drakensberg access point
It's the sweet spot for hikers who want multi-day mountains without expedition-level gear.
Standard 5-Day Hut Sequence
Ezemvelo assigns hut nights on booking. The classic route runs north to south:
| Day | Hut | Approx. distance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gxalingenwa Hut | ~12 km | Introductory climbs from Pholela |
| 2 | Cobham Hut | ~14 km | Longer day; river valleys |
| 3 | Yellowwood Hut | ~10 km | Middle section; weather exposure |
| 4 | Sleepy Hollow Hut | ~14 km | Another solid day; pace management |
| 5 | Bushman's Nek | ~10 km | Descent to finish; arrange pickup |
Distances are planning figures from published route descriptions — your map, conditions and group pace may vary slightly.
Navigation and waymarking
The trail is waymarked, but mist and cloud are common. Carry:
- Downloaded offline maps
- Compass or GPS watch as backup
- Hut-to-hut notes from your booking confirmation
Permits and Booking
Reservations run through Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
Planning steps:
- Choose your start month and confirm hut availability for the full five-night sequence
- Book all hut nights in one reservation where possible
- Pay conservation and trail fees per current tariff
- Collect permits / paperwork as instructed — rules can change seasonally
Peak holiday periods fill early. Unlike the Otter's lottery pressure, Giants Cup still rewards advance planning, especially for Easter and school holidays.
Getting There and Transport
Pholela / Giants Castle (start):
- Roughly 3–4 hours from Durban, longer from Johannesburg
- Last access roads can be slow — aim to arrive the day before
Bushman's Nek (finish):
- Remote pass area on the Lesotho border side of the range
- Pre-book shuttle or arrange two-vehicle logistics
- Confirm pass road conditions after rain or snow
Many groups overnight near Underberg or Himeville before/after the trail for supplies and hot showers.
Accommodation and Catering
Huts are basic shelters with mattresses and communal space — not staffed lodges.
Bring:
- Sleeping bag appropriate for altitude nights
- Stove, fuel, lighter and cookware
- All meals and snacks for five days
- Biodegradable soap and a small towel
- Strong rubbish bags — carry all waste out
Water sources exist at huts, but treat or boil where advised. Fill up before long exposed sections.
Best Time to Hike
| Season | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Oct–Nov | Green hills, warming weather | Afternoon thunderstorms |
| Dec–Feb | Long days, summer holidays | Heat, crowds, storm risk |
| Mar–Apr | Clearer autumn light | Book early for Easter |
| May–Sep | Fewer hikers | Cold, snow possible on passes |
Winter can be spectacular for experienced hikers with proper kit — but novices should avoid icy pass days.
Fitness and Experience Level
Ideal for hikers who:
- Comfortable with 10–15 km days on consecutive days
- Have trained on hills, not just flat paths
- Can manage a moderate pack (food + layers, no tent)
River crossings and muddy sections slow groups down — don't plan marathon pace every day.
Packing Essentials
Use the Packing List Builder. Priorities:
- Pack: 45–60 L — food for five days adds volume
- Layers: Warm fleece/down for cold nights; sun protection by day
- Rain gear: Jacket and pack liner — non-negotiable
- Footwear: Waterproof trail boots with ankle support help in mud
- Trekking poles: Useful on long descents
- Cash: For gate fees, firewood restrictions vary — follow current rules
Budget (ZAR Planning Model)
Rough bands per hiker (excluding long-distance travel):
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Ezemvelo trail + hut fees | Check current tariff |
| Food (5 days) | ZAR 700–1,100 |
| Stove fuel | ZAR 100–200 |
| Transfers | ZAR 1,000–2,500 |
| Pre/post lodging | ZAR 500–1,200 per night |
Run your numbers in the Trek Cost Calculator.
Giants Cup vs Otter vs Cederberg
| Giants Cup | Otter Trail | Cederberg | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setting | Drakensberg highlands | Tsitsikamma coast | Cederberg sandstone |
| Distance | ~60 km | ~42 km | Flexible |
| Style | Mountain huts | Coastal huts | Wild camp |
| Difficulty | Moderate | Moderate–challenging | Challenging |
| Booking | Ezemvelo | SANParks (high demand) | CapeNature / self |
Safety Notes
- Lightning risk in summer — start early, descend if storms build
- Hypothermia is real at altitude even in summer
- Tell someone your hut sequence and expected finish day
- Emergency evacuation is difficult — hike within your group's ability
