By car
| From | Drive time (approx.) |

| Underberg | 1–1.5 hours |

- Arrive the day before Day 1 — last access roads are slow
- 4x2 usually fine in dry conditions; 4x4 shuttles sometimes needed on rough sections
- Collect Ezemvelo permits as instructed before starting
By air
Fly into Durban (DUR) or Johannesburg (JNB), then rent a car or book a Berg transfer to Underberg / Giants Castle.
Getting home from Bushman's Nek (finish)
Bushman's Nek is a remote pass on the Lesotho border side:
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
| Pre-booked shuttle | Most common — meet on Day 5 afternoon |
| Two-vehicle shuffle | Leave car at each end via transfer company |
| Local 4x4 operator | Essential after rain or snow on pass roads |
Confirm pass road conditions after wet weather — access can change.
Underberg & Himeville — supply bases
Most hikers use Underberg or Himeville for:
- Final grocery shopping before the trail
- Pre-night lodging before Pholela
- Post-trail hot shower and meal after Bushman's Nek
- Shuttle operator bookings
Stock up here — limited options once you're on the mountain.
Shuttle planning checklist
- Book Day 5 pickup before hut reservation if possible
- Confirm 4x4 requirement for your dates
- Agree meeting point at Bushman's Nek
- Split costs across group (ZAR 1,000–2,500 range)
- Allow buffer after Day 5 — muddy trails slow finish times
International visitors
| Step | Tip |
|---|---|
| Flights | Durban is closer; JNB works with extra drive |
| Car hire | Book early in December holidays |
| Cash | ZAR for gate fees and shuttle tips |
| Buffer day | Winter snow can delay pass access |
