Table Mountain isn't one hike — it's a massif with a menu of routes. At 1,086 m, the flat-topped icon dominates Cape Town, but how you reach the plateau depends on whether you want brutal direct ascent, forest ravines, full-day loops or gentler lower slopes.
My compilation film covers four longer day hikes from the post-lockdown series — the routes locals love when they have 5–8 hours and something to celebrate. That's deliberately beyond Lion's Head, which is the city's quick sunrise sprint (see the Lion's Head guide for that).
This page helps you choose your line and links to route-specific guides and trek overviews.

The Four Routes in My Compilation
The compilation video ties together the longer Cape Town day hikes filmed after lockdown. Each has a dedicated guide and trek overview:
1. Platteklip Gorge
The classic steep ascent — relentless steps through fynbos and proteas from the Newlands side to the summit. Direct, exposed, iconic.
- Guide: Platteklip Gorge
- Trek overview: /treks/platteklip-gorge/
- Film: Platteklip trail film
- Best for: Hikers who want the canonical foot ascent
2. Woody Ravine
A forest ravine climb with descent via Kasteelpoort — steep, shaded lower sections and big views of Lion's Head and the city bowl.
- Guide: Woody Ravine
- Trek overview: /treks/woody-ravine/
- Film: Woody Ravine trail film
- Best for: Hikers who prefer ravine forest over open gorge
3. Newlands Circular Ravine
The full loop — Newlands Forest → Platteklip → summit → Kasteelpoort descent. The complete Table Mountain day with friends, summit toasts and a proper descent route.
- Guide: Newlands Circular Ravine
- Trek overview: /treks/newlands-circular-ravine/
- Film: Newlands loop trail film
- Best for: Fit groups wanting a 6–8 hour loop
4. Cecilia Forest
The moderate outlier — lush indigenous forest, waterfall chasing and enough climbing to feel like a real hike without Platteklip brutality. Lower on the massif, greener, gentler.
- Guide: Cecilia Forest
- Trek overview: /treks/cecilia-forest/
- Film: Cecilia Forest trail film
- Best for: Moderate hikers, forest lovers, post-rain waterfall runs

Lion's Head — The Fifth Hike (Not in the Compilation)
Lion's Head deserves mention because every visitor asks about it — but it's a different category. At ~5.5 km and 1.5–3 hours, it's Cape Town's sunrise training classic, not a full Table Mountain day.
I hike Lion's Head regularly for conditioning before trips like the Cederberg. It doesn't feature in the compilation because the film focuses on longer summit missions. Full guide: Lion's Head · /treks/lions-head/.
How to Pick Your Route
Choose Platteklip for the direct, famous ascent — or as the up-leg of the Newlands Circular loop.
Choose Woody Ravine for forest shade, ravine character and Kasteelpoort descent without committing to the full Newlands loop.
Choose Newlands Circular when you have a full day, fit friends and want ascent plus a scenic descent in one hike.
Choose Cecilia Forest when you want green forest and waterfalls without committing to the plateau — ideal warm-up or rainy-season hike.
Choose Lion's Head when time is short, you want sunrise, or you're building fitness before the big routes.
Still unsure? Start at the Cape Town day hikes hub for the full menu with South Africa context.
Practical Tips (All Table Mountain Routes)
Start early
Summit routes need 6–7 AM starts in warm months. Cecilia Forest is more forgiving but still benefits from an early start before Cape Town heat.
Water and food
No shops on the mountain. Carry 2+ litres for summit days, 1+ litre for Cecilia. Pack lunch for any route over 4 hours.
Wind, cloud and the tablecloth
The tablecloth (cloud spilling over the summit) arrives fast. Exposed sections on Platteklip, Kasteelpoort and the plateau become dangerous in high wind. Check conditions; turn back if needed.
TMNP / SANParks
All routes fall within Table Mountain National Park. Follow SANParks guidance on fires, baboons, dogs and trail closures. See the SANParks TMNP page.
Navigation
Main routes are well trodden but phone signal is patchy. Download offline maps before you go — especially for loop combinations.
Cable car option
After Platteklip or a plateau traverse, the Table Mountain Cableway can save your knees — if it's open (wind closes it regularly). Don't plan on it as your only descent.
Beyond Table Mountain
When you've ticked off Cape Town's urban trails, South Africa's multi-day options await:
- Cederberg — Wolfberg Cracks, remote rock wilderness
- Giants Cup Trail — Drakensberg huts
- Otter Trail — Tsitsikamma coast
- South Africa hiking guide
Final Thoughts
Table Mountain rewards route choice. There's no single "best" line — only the one that matches your fitness, time and mood. The compilation film captures four longer favourites from a post-lockdown summer; Lion's Head keeps you honest between them.
Pick a route, read the specific guide, start early and enjoy one of the world's great urban mountains.
