Lion's Head Hike Cape Town | Sunrise Summit Guide
Lion's Head day hike — ~5.5 km round trip, chain sections near the summit, 360° Cape Town views and my go-to training hike before trips like Cederberg.

Lion's Head is the hike Capetonians do before breakfast. A spiralling path up the city's most recognisable mini-summit, chain-assisted sections near the top, and 360° views over Table Mountain, the Atlantic seaboard and the city bowl. No dedicated film for this one — it's too familiar — but I've hiked it countless times as training before bigger trips, including prep for the Wolfberg Cracks in the Cederberg.
At roughly 5.5 km round trip and moderate difficulty, Lion's Head is the perfect counterpoint to the 5–8 hour Table Mountain epics in my post-lockdown series. Short, iconic, best at sunrise.

The Lion's Head Experience
The trail starts from Lion's Head parking on Signal Hill Road — one of the most popular trailheads in the city, so parking fills fast on weekends. The path spirals around the peak rather than attacking it head-on, which spreads the gradient and delivers changing views as you climb.
Lower sections are a wide dirt path with steady incline. Higher up, the route narrows, rockier sections appear, and you'll hit the chain sections that define Lion's Head for many hikers. These aren't technical climbs — think assisted scrambling with metal handles — but they require sure footing and calm in exposure. If you're nervous with heights, go slowly and let faster hikers pass.
The summit is small and often crowded at sunrise, but the panorama is unbeatable: Table Mountain wall-to-wall on one side, Camps Bay and the Atlantic on the other, city lights fading as the sun comes up.
Sunrise Hiking — Why It's the Classic
Capetonians treat Lion's Head sunrise as a ritual. Torches/headlamps for the first 30–45 minutes, a jacket for cold pre-dawn air, then coffee-from-a-flask moments as the sky turns orange.
Timing tips:
- Check sunrise time and aim to summit 10–15 minutes before
- Leave parking 45–60 minutes before your target summit time (longer if unfamiliar)
- Weekdays are quieter; Saturday sunrise is social and busy
I used these dawn repeats as conditioning — steady climbing, early starts, legs used to uneven terrain — before heading three hours north to the Cederberg. As I wrote in the Wolfberg prep guide: "Even short trails like Lion's Head or parts of Table Mountain helped us ease into the rhythm of climbing."
Practical Tips
What to pack
- Headlamp for sunrise starts
- 1 litre water minimum (more in summer)
- Light wind jacket — summit exposure
- Grippy trail shoes (chains and rock are slippery when damp)
Safety on chains
Chains are manageable for most fit hikers but not ideal in high wind or rain. Turn back if conditions deteriorate — Lion's Head rescues happen when people push through bad weather on exposed sections.
Parking and access
Arrive early for weekend sunrise. Uber/Bolt works for drop-off; arrange pickup — phone signal can be patchy. Stay aware of personal safety in isolated pre-dawn parking (hike in groups when possible).
TMNP
Lion's Head falls within Table Mountain National Park. Stick to the main path, pack out litter and respect seasonal fire-risk trail closures.
Dogs and crowds
Policy on dogs changes — verify current TMNP rules. The trail gets very busy at peak times; weekday mornings are the calmest training window.
Lion's Head vs Table Mountain Routes
| Hike | Time | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Lion's Head | 1.5–3 h | Short summit, chains, sunrise icon |
| Platteklip Gorge | 5–7 h | Full Table Mountain ascent |
| Woody Ravine | 5–8 h | Forest ravine + Kasteelpoort |
| Cecilia Forest | 4–6 h | Moderate forest loop |
| Newlands Circular | 6–8 h | Full TM loop |
Lion's Head is the weekday workout; the others are weekend missions. Both belong in a Cape Town hiking trip — see the day hikes hub for the full picture.
Is Lion's Head Right for You?
Great fit if you:
- Want a short, scenic summit with minimal logistics
- Are chasing sunrise or golden-hour photos
- Need a moderate hike to build fitness for longer routes
- Have 1.5–3 hours including parking and photos
Less ideal if you:
- Have severe fear of heights (chain sections are exposed)
- Expect solitude at Saturday sunrise (it's popular for a reason)
- Want a full-day wilderness feel (choose Table Mountain routes instead)
Final Thoughts
Lion's Head never gets old — even when you've done it dozens of times. It's the hike that keeps you trail-ready between the big adventures, the sunrise that resets your week, and the view that sells Cape Town to every visitor.
No film needed. Just an early alarm, a headlamp and the city waking up at your feet.
