Platteklip Gorge — the classic steep Table Mountain ascent from Newlands Forest through fynbos and proteas to summit views. Post-lockdown hike with summit beers.

If Table Mountain has a rite-of-passage route, it's Platteklip Gorge. Relentless uphill. Fynbos and proteas on either side. No polite switchbacks — just a straight assault on the plateau that every Capetonian hiker knows in their bones.
My version started from Newlands Forest, climbing Platteklip to the summit where we stopped for snacks, beers and views across to Lion's Head before continuing across the mountain. It's tough but honest — the kind of hike that doesn't let you pretend you're fitter than you are.

Why Hikers Choose Platteklip
Platteklip is the most direct way up Table Mountain on foot. Cable car passengers float up in minutes; Platteklip hikers earn every metre. That directness is the appeal and the challenge — there's nowhere to hide when the gorge keeps climbing.
The botanical payoff is real. Cape Town's fynbos biome is UNESCO heritage for a reason. In season, proteas and ericas line the path. Stop occasionally (you'll need to) and look back — the city bowl and Atlantic appear behind you as altitude increases.
On the plateau, the mood shifts. Wide sky, flat top, views of Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles spine. We treated the summit like a milestone — food, drinks, photos, the works. You can descend via cable car (ticket + queues) or continue on foot routes like Kasteelpoort as part of a Newlands Circular loop.
The Hike — Stage by Stage
Newlands Forest to gorge mouth
Starting from Newlands Forest sets a gentler tone before the climb begins — shaded paths, stream crossings, the smell of pine and indigenous trees mixing. Use this section to warm up; Platteklip itself waits ahead.
The gorge climb
This is the heart of the hike. Platteklip Gorge is steep, stepped and exposed to sun on clear days. Pace is everything — small steps, steady breathing, regular water breaks. The gorge funnels upward between rock walls; fitness matters more than technical skill, but respect the exposure.
Summit plateau
Emerging onto the Table Mountain plateau feels like entering another world — flat, windswept, vast. Allow 30–60 minutes minimum for views, food and regrouping. Watch the weather; cloud can pour over the edge without warning.
Continuing or descending
From here your day can branch:
- Cable car down to Lower Cable Station (check operating hours and wind closures)
- Kasteelpoort descent as part of the Newlands Circular Ravine loop
- Plateau traverse toward other viewpoints (add time and navigation awareness)
Practical Tips
Start early — non-negotiable
Platteklip in midday sun is miserable. Aim for a 6–7 AM start from Newlands. You'll climb in cooler air and have buffer time on the plateau.
Water, sun and wind
Carry 2+ litres, sunscreen, a hat and a wind layer. The gorge heats up; the plateau can be cold and windy even on warm days.
Footwear
Trail shoes or hiking boots with good grip on worn stone steps. Platteklip is hard on knees — poles help on the descent if you walk down.
TMNP rules
You're in Table Mountain National Park. No litter, no fires, stay on the marked gorge path. Baboons on the mountain are habituated — secure food and don't engage.
Pair with a loop
If you have 6–8 hours and strong legs, Platteklip up + Kasteelpoort down via the Newlands Circular is the classic full-day. Platteklip-only up-and-down is punishing on the knees.
Route Comparison

| Woody Ravine | Woody Ravine trailhead | Forest ravine, Kasteelpoort down |

| Cecilia Forest | Kirstenbosch/Cecilia | Moderate forest, no summit brutality |

Is Platteklip Right for You?
Great fit if you:
- Want the iconic Table Mountain foot ascent
- Have solid hill fitness and a full morning to spare
- Love fynbos botany and big summit views
- Are building toward the Newlands Circular loop
Less ideal if you:
- Are hiking with beginners (try Cecilia Forest or Lion's Head)
- Have knee problems (descent options matter — plan before you start)
- Dislike exposed, repetitive climbing
Final Thoughts
Platteklip Gorge is Cape Town hiking distilled — steep, floral, uncompromising and unforgettable at the top. Summit beers with friends, Lion's Head across the bowl, the city at your feet: that's the reward for the gorge's relentless climb.
Respect the mountain, start early and save something cold for the plateau.
