Newlands Circular Ravine Hike | Table Mountain Loop Guide
Newlands Circular Ravine — full Table Mountain loop from Newlands Forest via Platteklip Gorge to summit and Kasteelpoort descent. Post-lockdown hike with friends, 6–8 hours.

The Newlands Circular Ravine loop is Cape Town hiking at its most complete — start in Newlands Forest, climb Platteklip Gorge to the Table Mountain summit, celebrate with views of Lion's Head, then descend via Kasteelpoort back toward the Atlantic side. Ascent and descent. Forest and plateau. Suffering and reward.
I hiked this post-lockdown with close friends, and it felt as much like reconnection as mountaineering — rocky trails, summit toasts, the shared relief of being outdoors together again. Budget 6–8 hours with a fit group and don't underestimate the Kasteelpoort knees.

The Loop — Stage by Stage
1. Newlands Forest
The day begins gently in Newlands Forest — shaded paths, stream crossings, the calm before Platteklip. Use this section to warm up and distribute weight in your pack. Parking and access can be busy on weekends; start early.
This forest approach is shared with the standalone Platteklip Gorge hike — the loop simply keeps going after the summit instead of turning back.
2. Platteklip Gorge ascent
The loop's crux is the Platteklip climb — the same relentless gorge that defines the classic ascent. Fynbos, proteas, stone steps and open exposure. Pace steadily; you've got hours ahead including descent.
For gorge-specific tips, see the Platteklip guide. On the loop, the mindset shift is key: you're not climbing to turn around — you're climbing through to the other side of the mountain.
3. Table Mountain summit plateau
Emerging onto the plateau is the day's emotional peak. Wide sky, flat top, Lion's Head across the bowl, city and ocean in every direction. We stopped for snacks, drinks and photos — build 30–60 minutes into your schedule here.
Watch weather. Cloud can roll over the table edge quickly. If the tablecloth arrives, reassess before committing to an exposed descent.
4. Kasteelpoort descent
Kasteelpoort is the scenic payoff — a historic descent route with rocky steps, views back toward the massif and the satisfaction of completing a true loop. It's also hard on knees and quads after a long day.
Trekking poles help. Don't rush tired legs on loose rock. This section separates a good day from a rescue call.
Why Do the Full Loop?
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Platteklip up & down | Simple logistics | Brutal repeat on knees |
| Platteklip up + cable car | Saves descent | Wind closures, queues, cost |
| Newlands Circular loop | Complete traverse, varied terrain | Long day, navigation + fitness |
The loop gives you both sides of Table Mountain — forest approach, gorge suffering, plateau glory and a proper western descent. It's the hike locals respect.
Woody Ravine offers an alternate ascent line (Woody Ravine guide) if you want ravine forest instead of Platteklip — but the Newlands Circular as filmed follows Platteklip + Kasteelpoort.
Practical Tips
Start time
6 AM at the trailhead in warm months. You need daylight for Platteklip, plateau time and Kasteelpoort.
Water and food
2+ litres per person and a full lunch plus summit snacks. Nothing available on route. We carried extra for celebration at the top — worth the weight.
Navigation
The loop uses well-known TMNP paths, but fatigue breeds mistakes. Download offline maps and know your descent junction before leaving the plateau.
Wind and weather
Kasteelpoort in high wind is unpleasant and risky. Check forecast; the cable car is not a planned escape on a pure loop — have a bail-out plan if conditions turn.
Fitness and group pace
This is a group hike route — match pace on Platteklip, regroup on the plateau, stay patient on Kasteelpoort. Not ideal for mixed fitness unless the faster hikers accept long summit waits.
TMNP
Standard Table Mountain National Park rules apply — baboons, fire bans, stay on paths. Tell someone your loop plan and expected finish time.

Is the Newlands Circular Right for You?
Great fit if you:
- Want the complete Table Mountain day in one hike
- Have 6–8 hours and solid hill fitness
- Enjoy loop logic (different ascent and descent)
- Like hiking with friends at a social summit pace
Less ideal if you:
- Are new to Cape Town trails (build up via Cecilia Forest and Lion's Head)
- Have knee issues (Kasteelpoort descent is demanding)
- Need flexibility for cable car bail-out (pure loop commits you to walking down)
Final Thoughts
The Newlands Circular Ravine loop is the hike I'd recommend to a fit friend who asks "If I only do one big Table Mountain day, which one?" — Platteklip's honesty, summit magic, Kasteelpoort's views and the quiet satisfaction of completing a full circuit.
Post-lockdown, it reminded us what these mountains are for: effort, views and time with people who matter. Start early, pack properly and earn the whole loop.
