Woody Ravine is one of Table Mountain's quieter summit lines — a steep climb through indigenous forest that opens onto big-sky views of Cape Town, Lion's Head and the Atlantic. I hiked it right after lockdown with close friends: hours of catching up on the trail, snacks and beers at the top, then descent via Kasteelpoort back toward the city side.
It's a full-day commitment (plan 5–8 hours) and one of the highlights of my Cape Town day hikes series. Less famous than Platteklip, but every bit as rewarding if you like forest shade, rocky steps and a proper mountain day with company.

What Makes Woody Ravine Special
Most visitors know Platteklip Gorge — the straight-up classic. Woody Ravine is the alternative for hikers who want more forest cover early on and a less tram-track feel. The ravine narrows, the climb steepens, and you pull yourself up through shade until the world opens on the Table Mountain plateau.
From the top, the views are postcard Cape Town: the flat-topped massif behind you, Lion's Head across the bowl, city and ocean stretching out. We took our time — this was one of the first big hikes with friends after lockdown, and the summit felt like a reunion as much as a summit.
The Kasteelpoort descent is the classic return line — rocky, scenic and knee-testing. You drop back toward the Atlantic side with the mountain at your back.
The Hike — What to Expect
The ascent
Woody Ravine starts as a proper mountain path and quickly becomes a steep ravine climb. Tree roots, rock steps and tight switchbacks keep you working. Unlike the open heat of Platteklip, you get indigenous forest shade for much of the lower section — welcome on a warm Cape Town morning.
Pace yourself. This isn't a race. With friends, we stopped constantly — partly for breath, partly because we had months of conversation to catch up on.
On the plateau
Once you crest the ravine, the character changes. Fynbos, wide views and the strange flatness of the Table Mountain plateau. This is where summit snacks (and in our case, beers) happen. Allow time to wander — the plateau is bigger than it looks.
Kasteelpoort descent
Kasteelpoort is a historic descent route — rocky, exposed in places, and hard on the knees. Trekking poles help. Watch footing on loose rock and don't rush; late-afternoon tired legs are when slips happen.
Practical Tips
Start early
Aim to start by 7 AM (earlier in summer). You want the ravine climb in cool air and plenty of daylight for the full loop.
Water and food
Carry at least 2 litres per person and a solid lunch. There is nothing for sale on the route. We packed snacks for the ravine and saved the good stuff for the plateau.
Wind and weather
Table Mountain weather turns quickly. If the tablecloth rolls in or wind picks up on exposed sections, adjust your plan. Kasteelpoort in high wind is unpleasant at best.
TMNP and safety
Hike within Table Mountain National Park rules — stay on paths, watch for baboons (don't feed them), and tell someone your route. Cell signal is patchy; download offline maps.
Hiking with friends
Woody Ravine is ideal for a fit group — shared suffering, shared views. Match pace to the slowest climber on the ravine; you can spread out on the plateau.
How Woody Ravine Compares

Is Woody Ravine Right for You?
Great fit if you:
- Want a full Table Mountain day without the Platteklip crowds
- Enjoy forest ravine climbing and a scenic descent
- Have 5–8 hours and decent hill fitness
- Like hiking with friends at a social pace
Less ideal if you:
- Are new to hiking (try Lion's Head or Cecilia Forest first)
- Need a short route or have knee issues (Kasteelpoort descent is demanding)
- Dislike steep, rocky terrain
Final Thoughts
Woody Ravine was exactly what we needed after lockdown — hard enough to feel like an adventure, beautiful enough to remind us why we live at the foot of this mountain. Steep forest, big views, cold drinks on the plateau and a long descent with tired legs and good company.
Start early, pack water and give yourself a full day. Table Mountain rewards the effort.
