Cape Town Day Hikes Guide | Table Mountain & Lion's Head
The complete guide to Cape Town day hikes — Table Mountain routes, Lion's Head sunrise, forest loops and my post-lockdown hiking series on the Western Cape's best urban trails.

When lockdown lifted, Cape Town didn't just reopen — it exploded back onto the trails. Friends who hadn't seen each other in months met at dawn on Table Mountain, beers appeared on the plateau, and the city's hiking culture felt more alive than ever. That post-lockdown energy is what sparked my Cape Town day hikes series on YouTube: six routes filmed with close friends, from brutal Platteklip ascents to gentler forest loops.
This is the parent planning hub for Cape Town day hiking. Each route also has a thin trek overview at /treks/{slug}/ (stats, film and tools) plus a complete guide with turn-by-turn detail — you don't need nine satellite articles for a half-day urban hike.
Whether you want a sunrise sprint up Lion's Head, a full-day Table Mountain loop, or a moderate waterfall chase in Cecilia Forest, start here, then open the route guide that matches your time and fitness.

Table Mountain summit routes (hard, 5–8 hours)
These are the full-day commitments — steep, rewarding and best started early. Not sure which line? Start with the Table Mountain overview.
Moderate options (4–6 hours or less)
Cecilia Forest and Lion's Head are the lower-commitment picks — forest waterfalls or a short summit with chains. Ideal before you commit to a Platteklip or Woody Ravine day.
My Post-Lockdown Cape Town Series
After months indoors, hiking with friends again felt like a celebration. I filmed four longer Table Mountain day hikes plus Cecilia Forest — not the quick Lion's Head dash (that's my weekday training hike), but the routes where you earn the summit over 5–8 hours of climbing, snacking and catching up.
The compilation film ties the series together. Each route also has its own guide and dedicated film where noted:
- Woody Ravine — steep ravine, Kasteelpoort descent
- Platteklip Gorge — Newlands Forest start, summit beers
- Newlands Circular Ravine — the full loop
- Cecilia Forest — waterfalls and green lower slopes
- Table Mountain hub — route comparison
Lion's Head doesn't have a dedicated film, but I mention it in the Wolfberg Cracks prep guide as part of my Cape Town conditioning routine before heading north to the Cederberg.
How to Choose Your Hike
Pick Lion's Head if you:
- Want a short summit (1.5–3 hours) with iconic views
- Are chasing sunrise or a weekday training hike
- Prefer chains and exposure without a full-day commitment
Pick Cecilia Forest if you:
- Want forest and waterfalls without Platteklip brutality
- Need a moderate introduction to TMNP trails
- Are hiking after winter rains when streams run strongest
Pick Platteklip Gorge if you:
- Want the classic direct ascent — relentless and honest
- Are comfortable with steep, exposed climbing for hours
- Plan to combine with a loop (see Newlands Circular)
Pick Woody Ravine if you:
- Prefer a forest ravine approach over open gorge
- Want Kasteelpoort descent and views of TM + Lion's Head
- Like a slightly less crowded line than Platteklip
Pick Newlands Circular Ravine if you:
- Want the full Table Mountain loop in one day
- Have 6–8 hours and fit hiking partners
- Want ascent and a proper descent route (Kasteelpoort)
Practical Tips for All Cape Town Hikes
Start early
Cape Town heat and Cape Doctor wind pick up by late morning. Summit routes especially need a 6–7 AM start in summer. Lion's Head sunrise hikers often leave before first light.
Carry more water than you think
There are no shops on the mountain. TMNP recommends at least 1.5–2 litres for full-day routes; Cecilia and Lion's Head still need 1 litre minimum. Winter/spring streams can help in forest sections but never rely on them.
Respect TMNP rules
Table Mountain National Park is SANParks-managed. Stay on marked paths, don't feed baboons, pack out all litter and check SANParks alerts for fire or trail closures. Dogs are not allowed on most Table Mountain summit routes — check current TMNP policy before you go.
Wind and weather
The tablecloth (cloud pouring over the summit) can arrive fast. If conditions turn, turn back — exposed ridges and chain sections on Lion's Head become dangerous in high wind. Check the Table Mountain cableway weather page as a rough summit indicator.
Getting around
Most trailheads are reachable by Uber/Bolt from the city bowl, but cell signal drops on the mountain — download offline maps and agree a pickup point before you start. Parking at Lion's Head and Newlands fills early on weekends.
Beyond Cape Town
Cape Town day hikes are the gateway to South Africa's bigger adventures. When you're ready for multi-day trails:
- Cederberg — Wolfberg Cracks, rock formations, wild camping
- Giants Cup Trail — Drakensberg hut-to-hut
- Otter Trail — Garden Route coast

Final Thoughts
Cape Town is one of the few cities where you can summit a world-famous mountain before lunch and swim in the Atlantic by afternoon. The post-lockdown series reminded me why these trails matter — not just for fitness, but for friendship, views and the simple joy of being back on the mountain.
Pick your route, start early, pack water and enjoy one of the world's great urban hiking playgrounds.
