Bernina Trek Packing List
What to pack for the Bernina Trek hut-to-hut route — 30–40 L SAC kit, layers, poles and the gear Lee carried on a 7-day Via Bernina crossing.

The Bernina Trek is pure SAC hut-to-hut — no tent, no sleeping bag, no stove. You still carry everything for seven long mountain days through glacier country. My biggest mistake was a pack that was far too heavy (camera gear, batteries, a physical book). This Bernina packing list is what I'd bring if I hiked it again tomorrow — lighter and smarter.

Packing rules for Via Bernina
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| 30–40 L pack, as light as possible | 25–34 km stages punish every extra kilo |
| No tent or sleeping bag | Six SAC hut nights with half board |
| Sleeping bag liner required | Dorm bunks at every hut |
| Trekking poles essential | Day 2–3 descents destroyed my legs without enough pole use |
| 2 L+ water capacity | Hot Swiss summer days; long gaps between refills |
| CHF cash | Remote huts — don't rely on Apple Pay alone |
Backpack
Aim for under 8 kg base weight if you can. Hut-to-hut doesn't need a 65 L expedition pack.
Organisation:
- One dry bag for liner + hut clothes
- Small pouch for first aid and toiletries
- Snack pocket accessible on trail
Clothing layers
Alpine days swing from hot exposed valleys to cold cols. Layering beats one heavy jacket.
On trail
- 2 moisture-wicking shirts (1 wear, 1 spare)
- 1–2 underwear, 1–2 hiking socks (merino)
- Hiking trousers or shorts you trust on rock
- Lightweight fleece + insulating layer (synthetic/down)
- Waterproof shell — storms hit fast (Day 4 major storm at Tschierva)
- Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50)
- Thin gloves — useful on windy cols
Hut evenings
- Lightweight hut clothes (T-shirt, leggings/shorts)
- Camp sandals or hut slippers — Es-cha had showers; Jenatsch and Coaz did not
Footwear
- Broken-in boots or trail shoes with grip on loose rock — Day 3 had scrambling sections
- Blister kit: tape, Compeed, antiseptic

SAC hut kit
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Sleeping bag liner | Required in dorms |
| Earplugs + eye mask | Shared rooms |
| Quick-dry towel + wet wipes | Showers are a lottery — only Es-cha and Saoseo had warm showers on my trip |
| Minimal toiletries | Travel size; biodegradable soap |
| CHF cash | CHF 85–100/night half board + lunch money |
Trekking poles & water
Poles saved my knees on Day 2's brutal descent to Jenatsch. Non-negotiable for me on Bernina.
Water:
- 2 L capacity minimum on long hot stages (Day 3, 5, 6)
- Electrolyte tablets for August heat
- Optional filter — I refilled at huts and villages; streams need caution
Navigation & electronics
- Phone with offline GPX/maps downloaded before Madulain
- Power bank (10,000 mAh+)
- Headlamp for early starts (5 a.m. breakfast at Jenatsch)
- ID, Swiss travel card / train tickets
- Emergency blanket, whistle, basic first aid
Save Rega 1414 and 112 in your phone.
Food to carry
Half board covers dinner + breakfast. Pack:
- Emergency energy bars (always — Saoseo's promised breakfast didn't appear)
- Trail snacks for between huts
- Order packed lunch at hut the night before on long stages
What NOT to bring
| Leave home | Why |
|---|---|
| Tent, stove, fuel | SAC huts only |
| Full sleeping bag | Liner only |
| Heavy camera kit unless essential | I regretted every gram |
| Physical book | Kindle or nothing |
| More than 2 spare clothing sets | Huts have limited drying space |
| Cotton base layers | Slow to dry |
