You don't carry seven days of food on the Bernina Trek — SAC half board covers dinner and breakfast at every hut. What you need to plan is lunch, snacks, water and the occasional Pontresina second breakfast.

How eating works
| Meal | Source | Included in half board? |
|---|---|---|
| Dinner | SAC hut | Yes |
| Breakfast | SAC hut | Yes |
| Lunch | Packed from hut or village | No |
| Snacks / coffee | Carry or buy | No |
Half board = CHF 85–100/person/night including 12 meals over six nights.
Half board at SAC huts
Dinner
- Communal, set time — arrive before kitchen closes
- Es-cha first night: four-course dinner (highlight of the trip)
- Functional but filling elsewhere — you need calories after 25 km days
- Vegetarian usually available if noted when booking
Breakfast
- Bread, cheese, muesli, jam, coffee — functional, not exciting
- Request early breakfast the night before long stages (Jenatsch: 5 a.m. worked)
- Saoseo Day 7: promised early breakfast didn't happen — energy bars saved me
Packed lunch
Order the night before at the hut warden's desk.
Essential on:
- Day 2 (23.9 km)
- Day 3 (28.2 km)
- Day 6 (28.4 km)
A mediocre hut sandwich becomes excellent beside an alpine lake after 900 m of climbing.
Resupply stops
| Location | When | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Pontresina (pre-trek) | Night before Day 1 | Snacks, sunscreen, CHF cash |
| Near Silvaplana | Stage 3 area | Water, food after long descent |
| Pontresina (on trail) | Stage 5 | Second breakfast, coffee, pharmacy, supermarket |
Day 5 through Pontresina was a morale boost — real coffee and pastries after days of hut muesli.
Water on the trail
- Start each morning with full bottles
- Ask hut staff about water availability that day
- 2 L+ capacity on hot long stages — I underestimated August heat
- Mountain streams: treat if unsure; prefer hut/village water
- Water is a limited resource at some huts — don't assume unlimited free refills
Emergency food rule
Always carry backup food — bars, nuts, something sugary.
Plans that don't participate:
- Saoseo missing breakfast
- Longer day from trail closure
- Restaurant closed when you expected lunch
Food budget (per person, 7 days)
| Category | CHF (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Half board (in hut rate) | 510–600 (6 nights) |
| Packed lunches | 72–108 (6 × CHF 12–18) |
| Snacks, coffee, extras | 100–200 |
| Food subtotal | ~CHF 600–900 (incl. HB) |
See cost guide for full trek budget.
Day 6 Italy detour
I accidentally lunched in Italy before crossing back to Switzerland — pasta suspiciously affordable. Don't rely on this; carry lunch anyway.
Food mistakes to avoid
- Skipping packed lunch order on 28 km days
- Under-packing water in August heat
- No emergency snacks — breakfast doesn't always appear
- Assuming hut tap water is unlimited — ask first
- Only CHF card — carry cash for remote huts
Sample eating day (Day 3)
| Time | Meal |
|---|---|
| 05:00 | Early breakfast at Jenatsch |
| 10:30 | Trail snack |
| 13:00 | Packed lunch beside lake |
| 15:00 | Refill water at civilisation stop |
| 19:30 | Hut dinner at Coaz (half board) |
