Bernina accommodation is six SAC mountain huts — no hotels on trail, no camping required. Booking is the #1 logistics task: each hut has its own reservation system, and there is no central Bernina booking portal.

| 1 | Chamanna d'Es-cha | First hut climb from Madulain | Yes |
| 2 | Chamanna Jenatsch | Glacier-side, remote | No |

| 4 | Chamanna da Tschierva | Glacier views, shorter day | — |
| 5 | Boval | Near Morteratsch, busy day-hiker area | No |
| 6 | Rifugio Saoseo | Italian-speaking side, best shower | Yes (warm) |
Book all six before you fly — July and August fill fast.
Half board — how it works
Demi-pension / half board = bed + dinner + breakfast.
- Dinner: set time, communal — Es-cha was a four-course highlight
- Breakfast: functional (bread, cheese, muesli, coffee) — enough to climb
- Packed lunch: order the night before; essential on Days 2, 3, 6
- Early breakfast: request night before for long days — Jenatsch gave me 5 a.m. on Day 3; Saoseo promised early on Day 7 and didn't deliver (carry backup food)
Booking timeline
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| 3–6 months ahead | Lock all six hut dates for July–September |
| 2 months ahead | Confirm Corvatsch gondola hours for Stage 3 |
| 1 week before | Re-check hut opening emails; weather forecast |
| Each evening on trail | Order tomorrow's lunch; confirm departure time |
SAC membership: saves CHF 10–15/night — worth it if you'll hut-hike Switzerland again.
The shower lottery
| Hut | Shower on Lee's trip |
|---|---|
| Es-cha | Yes |
| Jenatsch | No |
| Coaz | No |
| Tschierva | Limited / storm day |
| Boval | No |
| Saoseo | Yes — best hut |
By Boval I was on wet wipes only for days. Pack accordingly.
Dorm etiquette
- Quiet after ~22:00 — earplugs essential
- Boots off inside; hut slippers help
- Charging points limited — one power bank per person
- Arrive early when possible — terrace coffee beats rushing
- Tell warden if you're delayed past dinner
Pre- and post-trail hotels
Before: Stay Pontresina (not Madulain) — gear shops, weather check, train to start.
After: Poschiavo has hotels; or continue to Tirano, Italy for Bernina Express return.
See getting there guide.
