Rainbow Mountain Packing List
What to pack for Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) — high-altitude day-hike layers, poles, hydration and Cusco acclimatisation kit.
Hiked by Lee
Guided
Last verified
Rainbow Mountain is a 5–6 hour day hike above 5,000 m — short distance, brutal altitude. Lee lost checked luggage in Cusco and still made the summit with a minimal daypack; layers, poles and hydration matter more than a huge kit list.

Packing rules for Vinicunca
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Layer up | Sub-zero wind at the ridge, warm sun in the valley |
| Trekking poles | Steep final pull; knee-saving on descent |
| 3 L water minimum | Dry air + altitude dehydrate you fast |
| Sun + lip protection | Thin atmosphere, strong UV |
| Small daypack (20–30 L) | Tour operators often cap bag size |
Daypack
20–30 L for water, layers, snacks and camera — Lee hiked with only a daypack after lost luggage in Cusco.
Footwear
Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support on rocky sections — buy in Cusco if your bags go missing like Lee's.
Clothing layers
| Layer | Notes |
|---|---|
| Base | Merino or synthetic — no cotton |
| Mid | Fleece or light down for the ridge |
| Shell | Waterproof jacket (wind and sudden showers) |
| Extremities | Hat, buff, thin gloves |
Trekking poles
Essential on the steep final pull — several hikers in Lee's group used horse rental instead when altitude hit hard.
On-trail essentials
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Sunglasses | Category 3–4 for snow glare |
| Headlamp | Pre-dawn pickups from Cusco (~5 a.m.) |
| Snacks + electrolytes | Nuts, chocolate, energy bars |
| Cash (soles) | Tips, toilet fees, horse rental |
| Sunscreen SPF 50+ | Strong UV above 5,000 m |
Optional but useful
- Diamox — discuss with a doctor before travel
- Rain pants — wet season (Nov–Mar)
- Camera + spare battery — cold drains batteries quickly
- Trekking gaiters — muddy trails
What operators may provide
Many Cusco day tours include breakfast, transport and a guide. Some offer horse rental on the steepest section.
