Getting to Rainbow Mountain: Cusco & Trailhead Transport

Cusco (CUZ) is the gateway — Lee flew via Lima on a long haul from Cape Town. The trailhead (~3 hours from Cusco by road) is almost always reached via guided tour transport unless you're arranging private drivers.

Trailheads are in the Cusipata or Chillca areas, roughly 100–130 km from Cusco.

Independent vs guided transport

Independent hiking is possible but logistics are fiddly — park entrance, timing, and altitude support matter. For a first Peru high-altitude hike, a reputable tour is the pragmatic choice.

Combining with Inca Trail

Many hikers acclimatise in Cusco, do Rainbow Mountain, then start the Classic Inca Trail — allow buffer days between for recovery and permit timing.
