Kilimanjaro crosses five climate zones — humid rainforest to –20 °C summit night. Lee's Machame Route was guided camping with porters carrying the main load; you still need the right layers, sleep kit and daypack for 5,895 m.

Packing rules for Kilimanjaro
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Layer everything | Rainforest heat to arctic summit in one week |
| Four-season sleeping bag | Nights hit –10 °C at Barafu; summit feels colder |
| Broken-in waterproof boots | Mud, scree and Barranco Wall scrambling |
| Trekking poles | Knee-saving on long descent from Uhuru |
| Headlamp + spare batteries | Midnight summit start; cold drains batteries |
| Hydration bladder | Guides stress constant water for altitude |
Daypack
25–35 L daypack for water, layers, snacks and rain gear. Porters carry the main duffel — confirm weight limit with your operator (often 15 kg).
Footwear
Waterproof boots with ankle support — broken in for months. Thick socks for cold high camps. Blister kit essential.
Clothing layers
| Layer | Notes |
|---|---|
| Base | Moisture-wicking — no cotton |
| Mid | Fleece for evenings |
| Down jacket | Summit night essential — Lee wore everything |
| Shell | Waterproof jacket + pants |
| Extremities | Beanie, liner gloves, summit mitts, sun hat |
Lee's summit night: water bottles froze within an hour; phone batteries died at the top.

| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Sleeping bag –15 °C or colder | Four-season rated — nights below freezing |
| Sleeping pad | Insulation from cold ground |
| Sleeping bag liner | Hygiene in shared camp conditions |
