Stage highlights
Day 1 — Rainforest entry
Machame Gate chaos — porters load up. 5 hours through humid forest to first camp. Tents pre-pitched; hot tea on arrival. Communal toilets are… an experience.
Day 2 — Into the moorlands
Pole pole — slow pace for acclimatisation. Giant heather and fynbos-like shrubs. Heart racing despite easy pace. First clear view of Kibo summit from Shira Plateau.
Day 3 — Lava Tower acclimatisation
Climb to Lava Tower (4,600 m) then descend to Barranco — classic climb-high-sleep-low. Alpine desert terrain; western glaciers visible. Night temps to –10 °C.
Day 4 — Barranco Wall
"The breakfast wall" — steep scramble, not technical. Views of Kibo close up. Long day to Barafu (4,640 m) — last camp before summit. Midnight briefing.
Day 5 — Summit night
| Time | Event |
|---|---|
| 00:00 | Depart Barafu — headlamps on |
| ~06:00 | Stella Point (summit rim) |
| ~06:30 | Uhuru Peak at sunrise |
| AM | Descent to Mweka Camp |
6-hour grind in –20 °C wind; water bottles freeze. Flat walk from Stella Point to Uhuru. Emotional descent with oxygen returning.
Day 6 — Forest exit
Leisurely descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Summit certificates. Hot shower in Moshi never felt better.
Alternative routes (planning context)
| Route | Days | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lemosho | 7–8 | Longer acclimatisation; scenic |
| Marangu | 5–6 | Hut route; faster ascent risk |
| Northern Circuit | 8–9 | Highest success rate |
| Rongai | 6–7 | Drier north approach |
Lee chose Machame for scenery + acclimatisation profile.
