Last verified
Ben Nevis is a 6–8 hour summit day on the Mountain Track — sunshine at Glen Nevis can turn to cloud, wind and snow near 1,345 m. Lee's trail runners weren't enough; waterproof boots, poles and layers made the difference.

Packing rules for Ben Nevis
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Waterproof boots | Rocky, wet and snowy sections near summit |
| Full waterproof shell | Rain and mist roll in fast |
| Trekking poles | Knee-saving on descent; balance on ice |
| Layers, not one jacket | Base → fleece → shell for 1,300 m gain |
| Navigation backup | Cloud can reduce visibility to metres |
| Pack light | Every extra kilo hurts on switchbacks |
Footwear
Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support — Lee switched from trail runners after slippery rock near the top.
Clothing layers
| Layer | Notes |
|---|---|
| Base | Moisture-wicking — no cotton |
| Mid | Fleece for higher elevation |
| Shell | Waterproof jacket and pants |
| Extremities | Gloves, hat — essential near summit |
Snow patches possible even in summer.
Daypack
20–30 L for water, snacks, layers, first aid and navigation. Keep it lean — long ascent with a heavy pack is brutal.
Trekking poles
Lee called poles a game-changer on rocky upper sections and the steep descent.
