A few months ago I packed the car in Amsterdam — with Joey — and drove all the way to Slovenia. I wasn't prepared for how incredible this country would be.
Mountains. Turquoise rivers. Wine valleys. Adventure. Peace. After ten days exploring with Joey, here's everything I wish I knew before going — practical planning and the story of that road trip in one place.

Why Visit Slovenia?
Slovenia might genuinely be one of Europe's most underrated countries.
It combines alpine scenery that rivals Switzerland, lakes like Austria, wine regions that feel like Tuscany, and adventure sports that rival anywhere in Europe — yet it still feels relatively undiscovered. That's what makes it special.
What makes Slovenia unique is how much variety exists in such a small country. Within a few hours you can go from alpine lakes → adventure rivers → wine country → (with more time) the Adriatic coast.

Best Time to Visit
The best time depends on what you want to do.
| Season | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr–May) | Waterfalls, road trips, fewer crowds | Snow possible on high plateaus; valleys can already feel warm |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Hiking, lakes, rafting | Busiest and hottest; book gorges ahead |
| Autumn (Sep–Oct) | Wine harvest, colours, calm | Brda shines |
| Winter | Skiing, alpine scenery, markets | Different trip entirely |
I visited at the end of April — beautiful, but higher mountains still had snow at Pokljuka while lower valleys felt like summer. You can experience four seasons in one trip.
Important: Weather changes fast. One thing I underestimated was how quickly conditions shift between elevation and valley. If you're hiking — or travelling with a dog — prepare for heat in gorges and lower areas even in spring.
How Long Should You Visit?
I thought five days might be enough. I was completely wrong.
This country packs incredible variety into a very small space: lakes, mountains, rivers, adventure, wine country, coastal towns. At least 7–10 days minimum.
Sample itineraries
| Duration | Focus |
|---|---|
| 3–4 days | Bled + Bohinj + Vintgar Gorge (one region, don't rush) |
| 7 days | Lakes + Soča Valley adventure |
| 10+ days | Lakes → Soča → Brda (+ coast if you extend) |
If you only have a few days: focus on one region instead of racing across the country.
Lee's 10-day route: Suggested itinerary below
Suggested 10-day itinerary
Lee's April boys' trip with Joey followed a clear arc — lakes for peace, Soča for adventure, Brda to slow down. Build weather buffer; don't rush the lakes or skip the wine-country finish.
| Days | Base | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Drive + Bohinj | Amsterdam → Germany overnight → arrive Bohinj |
| 3–5 | Bohinj | Savica, Bled sunrise, Vintgar, Pokljuka, Mostnica, lake runs |
| 6–8 | Soča (Kobarid) | Tolmin Gorge, rafting, Kozjak, kayaking, sauna evenings |
| 9–10 | Brda | Wine lunch, estate stay, e-bike loop, final tasting · depart |
Three acts — peace, adventure, reflection
| Act | Region | Theme | Deep guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Escape | Bohinj & Bled | Slowing down, rediscovering wonder | Lakes guide |
| 2 — Adventure | Soča Valley | Energy, freedom, exploration | Soča guide |
| 3 — Reflection | Brda wine country | Peace, gratitude, closure | Brda guide |
The drive from Amsterdam takes around thirteen hours — we stopped overnight in Germany. Bohinj was four slow days (Savica, Bled sunrise, Vintgar, Pokljuka, evening runs). Soča brought rafting, Kozjak, kayaking and sauna evenings near Kobarid. Brda closed with wine-estate lunch, e-biking and vineyard sunsets — Slovenia's quiet answer to Tuscany.
Getting Around
Do you need a car?
For the type of trip I did — absolutely yes.
The freedom of a car completely changes the experience, especially for Bohinj, the Soča Valley, wine country, and scenic mountain drives.
Public transport between major towns is decent; buses are often more useful than trains in tourist areas. Fine for Ljubljana ↔ Bled. Less ideal for waterfalls, gorges, and flexible outdoor days.
Road trip notes
- Roads are excellent; distances are short
- Mountain drives are stunning (Julian Alps, Pokljuka, Soča approach)
- Fuel was much cheaper than Amsterdam/Germany (~€1.58/L vs €2.50+ in Lee's trip)
- Lake Bled gets busy — parking isn't cheap (~€20 for sunrise when Lee visited)
| Transport cost | Rough guide |
|---|---|
| Car rental | Varies by season — book ahead for summer |
| Petrol | Noticeably cheaper than much of Western Europe |
| Parking (Bled) | Budget for premium parking at peak times |
| Buses | Work for town-to-town; check timetables for gorges |
Airports: Ljubljana Jože Pučnik (LJU) is the main international gateway. Some visitors fly to Trieste or Venice and drive in.
Where to Stay
Split Slovenia into regions — stay longer in fewer places.
| Region | Best for | Lee's pick |
|---|---|---|
| Bohinj & Bled | Alpine scenery, relaxing hikes, lake days | Base at Bohinj — calmer than Bled |
| Soča Valley | Rafting, kayaking, gorges, adventure | Cabin near Kobarid |
| Brda | Wine, cycling, slow travel | Wine farm stay |
| Coast | Adriatic towns (Piran, etc.) | Lee's next-trip addition |
Accommodation ranges from luxury lakeside hotels → mountain huts → riverside cabins → vineyard estates.
Tip: With a car, stay outside the busiest centres. Bohinj felt much calmer and more authentic than Bled. Smaller cabins became trip highlights themselves.
Budget per night (rough)
| Tier | Nightly range |
|---|---|
| Budget | €40–80 |
| Mid-range | €80–180 |
| Luxury | €200+ |
Season and location swing this significantly.
What to Pack
Slovenia's weather changes fast — pack for layers.
Essentials:
- Hiking shoes — even "easy" trails have stairs and wet rock
- Lightweight rain jacket
- Layers — valley heat + plateau snow in one trip
- Swimwear — lakes, river jumps, rafting
- Water bottle — carry more than you think in warm months
- Sunscreen
- Power bank — long days filming/hiking
- Daypack for gorges and waterfall hikes
With a dog: extra water, bowl, towel, EU pet passport. Full dog guide.
Food & Drink
Slovenian food surprised me — a mix of Central European, Italian and Balkan influences. Wine culture is massively underrated.
What I loved: relaxed dining, long lunches, outdoor terraces, good local wine, reasonable prices vs Western Europe.
- Coffee: ~€2–3
- Good meal: ~€15–30
- Wine tasting / estate lunch: excellent value in Brda
- Mountain hut soup: perfect after Pokljuka hikes
Costs & Budget
Compared to many Western European destinations, Slovenia felt surprisingly affordable.
| Expense | Rough cost (Lee's trip) |
|---|---|
| Coffee | €2–3 |
| Restaurant meal | €15–30 |
| Wine tasting | Very reasonable in Brda |
| Rafting / kayaking | Main activity splurge — still cheaper than many Alps operators |
| Fuel | ~€1.58/L |
| Bled parking | ~€20 (sunrise) |
| Vintgar Gorge | Timed ticket + dog ticket if applicable |
| Accommodation | Wide range — book ahead in summer |
Overall: very good value for the scenery and experience.
Must-Do Experiences

If I had to choose highlights:
Lakes & Alps
- Sunrise at Lake Bled — lives up to the hype; go early
- Lake Bohinj — Lee's favourite area overall; quieter, more authentic
- Savica Waterfall — easy, green, beautiful first hike
- Pokljuka Plateau — scenic drive; snow in spring on top
Gorges & waterfalls

- Vintgar Gorge — book timed entry; unreal turquoise water
- Tolmin Gorge — fantasy-world canyons in Soča Valley
- Kozjak Waterfall — hidden cave waterfall; great with dogs
- Mostnica Gorge — quieter alternative near Bohinj
Deep guides: Bled & Bohinj · Soča Valley
Adventure
- Rafting the Soča — highlight of the adventure leg
- Kayaking the Soča — different perspective on the valley
- E-biking Brda — vineyards and hill towns
Slow finish
- Brda wine estate lunch — five courses, no rush
- Vineyard sunsets — perfect trip closer
Deep guide: Brda wine country
Outdoor Activities
If you enjoy the outdoors, Slovenia is paradise:
| Activity | Where |
|---|---|
| Hiking | Bohinj, Bled loop, gorges, Pokljuka |
| Rafting / kayaking | Soča Valley |
| Cycling | Brda (e-bike recommended) |
| Running | Lake Bohinj loop |
| Waterfalls | Savica, Kozjak, gorge trails |
| Scenic drives | Julian Alps, Soča approach, Brda hills |
Is Slovenia Dog Friendly?
Yes — one of the best countries I've travelled with Joey.
- Many cafés and restaurants relaxed about dogs
- Most hiking trails accessible
- Outdoor lifestyle suits dog travel
Watch out for: summer heat in valleys and gorges; Vintgar requires dog tickets and timed entry; rafting days need safe cabin accommodation.

Safety
Slovenia felt very safe throughout — walking alone, driving mountain roads, hiking remote areas.
That said:
- Mountain weather changes quickly — check forecasts
- Gorge trails — wet wood, cliffs, heat exhaustion in summer
- Respect water on adventure days
- Carry water, tell someone your route on longer hikes
Internet, Payments & Language
Slovenia is incredibly easy as a traveller:
- English widely spoken in tourist areas
- Card payments work almost everywhere
- Mobile signal generally good
- Cash still useful at smaller mountain huts and rural spots
Common Mistakes (Learn from Lee)
- Underestimating trip length — five days isn't enough for the full variety
- Midday hikes in heat — especially Vintgar return and summer valleys
- Too much time in Bled town — more time at Bohinj instead
- Rushing Soča — stay longer if you love adventure
- Skipping Brda — don't miss the wine-country slow finish
- Not booking Vintgar — timed slots are strict
- Too little water for dogs — critical in gorges
- Skipping the coast — Lee's next-trip addition
Who Is Slovenia For?
Slovenia probably isn't right if you want huge cities, nightlife, or luxury shopping.
Perfect if you love:
- Nature and road trips
- Hiking, rivers, and adventure
- Slow travel and wine country
- Escaping somewhere peaceful
- Travelling with a dog

Final Thoughts
Before visiting Slovenia I had no idea how much this country would affect me. What surprised me most wasn't just how beautiful it is — but how peaceful it felt.
Life seemed slower. More connected to nature. After ten days with Joey, I genuinely didn't want to leave.
Slovenia gave me adventure, beautiful landscapes, great food and wine, and something I probably needed most: space to breathe.
I'll be back.
