Travelling Slovenia with a Dog | Mountains, Lakes & Slow Travel

A few months ago, Joey and I packed the car in Amsterdam and drove all the way to Slovenia. Ten days of mountains, lakes, rivers and wine valleys.

But more importantly — ten days travelling together. Slovenia turned out to be one of the best countries I've ever visited with a dog.

This guide balances the emotional side (companionship, freedom, slower travel) with practical usefulness — what actually works when you're road-tripping Slovenia with a four-legged co-pilot.

Getting to Slovenia with a Dog

The drive from Amsterdam is around 13 hours depending on traffic. Joey is a great road trip companion — frequent breaks, short walks, snacks, and he's happy.

We stopped overnight in Germany before continuing south. The moment we entered Slovenia, everything changed: massive mountains, crystal-clear rivers, quiet roads, endless outdoor space.

EU pet travel essentials

Travelling to Slovenia with a dog was straightforward because Joey already had:

• EU pet passport
• Up-to-date vaccinations
• Microchip

Essential if you're driving through Europe. Check current entry rules before you go — requirements can change.

Road trip tips:

• Break every 2–3 hours
• Shade and water in the car
• Secure harness or crate for motorways
• Pack familiar bedding for new cabins each region

Lake Bohinj — Almost Perfect for Dogs

We based ourselves near Lake Bohinj for four days. If you're travelling Slovenia with a dog, this area is almost perfect.

Quiet. Nature everywhere. Endless walking trails. Our accommodation sat beside a river — a massive bonus for Joey.

Why Bohinj works

• Wide open hiking trails and forests
• Fresh mountain air and lake access
• Cheaper accommodation than I expected vs Austria or Switzerland
• Many restaurants welcome dogs
• People generally relaxed about dogs on trails

By day three Joey was definitely feeling all the hiking. Fair.

Booking tip: Choose accommodation close to nature or water — outdoor space nearby makes every evening easier.

Savica Waterfall — First Hike with Joey

Our first proper adventure: Savica Waterfall — a great first hike with a dog.

• Trail is fairly easy with some stairs and uphill sections
• Dogs allowed
• Go early or outside peak season — crowded in summer
• Carry water from the start

One thing I noticed immediately: Slovenia feels intensely green. Joey settled into adventure mode very quickly.

Lake Bled with a Dog

Lake Bled deserves the hype — and it's very doable with a dog if you plan smart.

Early morning is everything

• Sunrise = empty paths, calm lake, best experience with a dog
• Paths around the lake are dog-friendly and mostly easy
• Afternoons get much busier — harder for dogs and owners

Parking: Lee paid around €20 for sunrise parking at Bled. Worth it for the stillness — but budget for it.

Walk the full lake loop early if you can. Joey loved it before the crowds arrived.

Vintgar Gorge — Important Dog Rules

Vintgar is one of the most beautiful gorges I've visited anywhere. With a dog, there are a few non-negotiables:

Heat	Gorge and uphill return get very hot in warmer months
Water	Carry more water than you think for your dog
Timing	Avoid midday in summer if possible

I underestimated how much water Joey would need on the return climb. Don't repeat my mistake.

Lee's takeaway: Stunning and worth it — but plan for heat, tickets, and an early slot.

Pokljuka Plateau — Cooler High Country

We drove up to Pokljuka Plateau while Bohinj felt almost like summer. Up here: snow and ice still hanging on in April.

If you're travelling with a dog in spring or summer, higher altitude areas like this are amazing — much cooler. Joey definitely appreciated the break from the heat.

Mostnica Gorge — Quieter Dog Walk

Mostnica Gorge became one of my favourite walks with Joey:

• Less crowded than Vintgar
• More shaded
• Calmer pace

If you're travelling with dogs, I'd recommend this over some of the busier attractions when you want an easier day.

Soča Valley with a Dog

The Soča Valley felt more adventurous — and still very dog-friendly for hikes and river walks.

What works

• Kozjak Waterfall — short, shaded, beautiful; one of the best dog-friendly hikes of the trip
• River trails and valley walks with Joey
• Cabin with sauna — great reset after hiking days

What doesn't (for the dog)

• Rafting and kayaking — Joey couldn't join (obviously)
• Solo travellers: you need accommodation where your dog can safely stay during water sports

Joey probably would have tried kayaking if we'd let him.

Brda Wine Country — Slow Days Together

The final days slowed down completely. Long walks through vineyards, quiet evenings, outdoor terraces.

Travelling with a dog naturally forces a slower pace — which became one of my favourite parts of the trip.

Most cafés and wine farms were relaxed about dogs as long as Joey behaved. Vineyard walks and village sunsets = easy dog days after harder hiking earlier in the trip.

Practical Dog Travel Tips

Heat and water

Slovenia can get surprisingly hot — especially gorges and lower valleys in late spring and summer.

• Carry extra water always
• Hike early morning when possible
• Use high plateaus (Pokljuka) for cooler walks
• Watch for tired paws on hot paths and wooden bridges

Fitness and terrain

Some hikes involve stairs, bridges, and steep sections. Fitness matters — for both of you.

What Surprised Me Most

Before this trip I didn't know how easy Slovenia would be with a dog. It became one of the best countries I've travelled with Joey.

The hiking. The outdoor lifestyle. The relaxed atmosphere. It just works for dog travel.

You need to prepare for heat, carry enough water, and plan activities carefully — but overall Slovenia felt welcoming, easy, and built for outdoor adventure.

Travel feels different when your dog is part of the journey. Slovenia gave us adventure, peace, beautiful hikes, and ten unforgettable days together.
