Soča Valley Guide | Rafting, Kayaking & Adventure in Slovenia
Soča Valley adventure with Joey — Kobarid base, Tolmin Gorge, Kozjak Waterfall, Soča River rafting and kayaking in Slovenia's turquoise river paradise.

After the peaceful lakes of Bohinj… it was time for something completely different.
For the next few days, Joey and I headed deep into Slovenia's Soča Valley — turquoise rivers, mountain adventures, hidden waterfalls, and some of the most fun outdoor activities I've done in Europe.
Less peaceful than Bohinj. More adventurous. Equally unforgettable.

Bohinj → Soča Valley
After four incredible days around Bohinj, we packed up and drove on. Even the transfer was spectacular — rain rolling through the mountains, clouds hanging low over the valleys, roads twisting endlessly through the Julian Alps.
Luckily Joey doesn't mind long road trips.
We based ourselves near Kobarid in a small wooden cabin hidden in the valley. Best surprise: a sauna in the living room. Quickly one of the best decisions of the trip.
Kobarid — Slow Arrival Day
The first day was intentionally slow. After all the driving and hiking around Bohinj, it felt good to simply settle in.
We explored the small town, did grocery shopping, and yes — used the sauna multiple times. Not every travel day needs to be packed with activities. Sometimes recovery is the plan.
Kobarid is a practical base: close to Tolmin Gorge, rafting operators on the Soča, and Kozjak Waterfall within easy reach.
Tolmin Gorge

The next morning, adventure officially started. Tolmin Gorge — and somehow Slovenia just kept producing one ridiculous landscape after another.
The colour of the water almost doesn't look real. The hike isn't too long, but there are uphill sections — and in warm weather, you feel them.
Around every corner: waterfalls, rock formations, turquoise rivers. Fantasy-world energy.
Rafting the Soča River

After Tolmin Gorge, the main event: rafting on the Soča River.
I joined a local company — wetsuits, helmets, a couple of terrible jokes, then straight into freezing mountain water. One of the highlights of the entire Slovenia trip.
The Soča is unreal. Bright turquoise flowing through massive mountain valleys. Our rapids weren't too extreme, which meant we could actually enjoy the scenery instead of just surviving. At certain points we even jumped in — refreshing for about three seconds.
Who it's for: Almost everyone. You don't need to be an expert — just show up and enjoy it.
Practical notes:
- Book with a reputable local operator in the Bovec / Kobarid area
- Bring a change of clothes and a towel
- Leave Joey at the cabin (or arrange dog care) — rafting days are human-only
- Spring water is cold — wetsuits are there for a reason
Evening Reset
Back at the cabin, life slowed down again. Joey got his evening walk. I got another sauna session.
At this point I was starting to understand why people fall in love with Slovenia — even the adventure days end quietly.
Kozjak Waterfall

The next morning Joey and I headed to Kozjak Waterfall — famous, and deservedly so.
The walk is beautiful: easy, peaceful, following the river almost the entire way. Exactly the kind of hike Joey loves.
Then at the end — pause — you arrive at a hidden waterfall tucked inside a cave. Magical.
Allow a relaxed morning; pair with a light afternoon or kayaking the next day.
Kayaking the Soča
After dropping Joey back at the cabin, I headed straight back to the river. This time: kayaking.
I thought I had some kayaking experience. These kayaks had other ideas — I flipped within the first five minutes. Surprisingly unstable. But after a while you find a rhythm.
And once again, the scenery steals the show. Nearly two hours floating through one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe.
Kayaking vs rafting:
| Rafting | Kayaking | |
|---|---|---|
| Skill | Beginner-friendly | More balance required |
| Social | Group fun | Smaller groups / more focus |
| Scenery | Epic | Epic |
| Lee's take | Best first Soča experience | Great day two on the river |
Book both if you have time — they're different ways to see the same unreal water.
Suggested 4–5 Day Itinerary
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Drive Bohinj → Kobarid · settle in · sauna |
| 2 | Slow day — town, groceries, rest |
| 3 | Tolmin Gorge AM · Soča rafting PM |
| 4 | Kozjak Waterfall with Joey AM · kayaking PM |
| 5 | Pack up · drive on (Brda wine country next for Lee) |
Build weather buffer — rain in the valley still looks cinematic but can shuffle outdoor bookings.
Travelling with a Dog
Joey came on gorge and waterfall hikes. Rafting and kayaking days = cabin time (or one person stays back if you're not solo).
The Soča segment worked because the cabin base had space, walks nearby, and a calm rhythm between high-adrenaline days.
Bohinj vs Soča — Which Order?
Lee did lakes first, river second — calm reset, then adventure. That pacing worked perfectly.
| Bohinj / Bled | Soča Valley | |
|---|---|---|
| Mood | Peaceful, reflective | Adventurous, energetic |
| Highlights | Lakes, sunrises, gorges | Rafting, kayaking, Tolmin, Kozjak |
| Base | Lake cabin | Kobarid valley cabin |
| Best for | Slow travel, running, photography | Outdoor sports, river days |
Do both on a 10-day Slovenia trip. Full lakes guide here.
What's Next: Brda Wine Country
The Slovenia journey ends in Goriška Brda — wine valleys, e-biking, estate lunches and slow travel in one of Europe's most underrated wine regions.

Final Reflection
The Soča Valley feels built for people who love the outdoors — hiking, rivers, adventure, nature. And somehow, even with all the activities, life still felt slower here. More connected. More present.
I'll come back.
