Lake Bled & Bohinj Guide | Slovenia with a Dog

Sometimes you don't realise how much you need nature… until you're standing in the middle of it.

After months of noise, screens, stress and routine, Joey and I packed the car and drove south to Slovenia — a country of alpine lakes, hidden gorges, mountain roads, and some of the most peaceful places I've experienced in Europe. I wasn't prepared for how beautiful it would be.

This was a boys' trip: ten days in the Julian Alps, based near Lake Bohinj for most of the stay, with day trips to Lake Bled, gorges, waterfalls and high plateaus. Not a checklist sprint — a much-needed reset.

Why Slovenia Surprised Me

I'd heard people talk about Slovenia for years, but it always stayed under the radar. The moment the Julian Alps appeared on the drive in, I knew the trip would be special.

Not just beautiful — I expected that. What hit harder was how peaceful it felt. Space to breathe. Slow down. Disconnect a little. Coffee, hiking, nature, repeat.

Slovenia honestly feels like one of Europe's hidden gems — especially if you love mountains, lakes, hiking, and calm travel.

Base: Lake Bohinj

We based ourselves near Lake Bohinj for four days. This area completely stole my heart.

Massive mountains. Crystal-clear water. Quiet villages. Rivers everywhere — our cabin sat beside one, and compared to Amsterdam or Germany, Slovenia felt incredibly affordable.

But what really stood out was the atmosphere. Everything felt slower. Calmer.

Savica Waterfall

Our first proper adventure: Savica Waterfall — only a short walk from where we stayed.

The trail is easy but intensely beautiful. Everything in Slovenia felt vividly green, like nature had been turned up to maximum. Joey was immediately in his element.

Then the waterfall appears — powerful, hidden away, surrounded by cliffs. Even with a few tourists around, it still felt peaceful. Coffee and a slow walk back. This became the rhythm of the trip.

Lake Bled Sunrise

The emotional centrepiece: sunrise at Lake Bled.

Alarm before 5am. Empty roads. Mist on the water. The castle glowing above the lake as light spilled over the mountains. I've seen a lot of beautiful places — this was something else.

Poor Joey stayed asleep in the car while I ran around filming. Completely worth the parking fee.

Walking Around Lake Bled

After sunrise, Joey and I walked the entire lake loop — the best way to experience Bled.

Pathways constantly change: forest one moment, water's edge the next. Views everywhere. The only problem? Nothing was open yet — me with camera gear and a very energetic dog, desperately searching for coffee. Eventually, salvation.

Allow 2–3 hours for the full circuit at a relaxed pace with a dog.

Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge — one of Slovenia's most famous natural attractions. Unlike some tourist hotspots, this one lived up to the hype.

Bright turquoise water cutting through the canyon. Wooden walkways. Every corner another view. The gorge isn't very long, but it's dense with beauty.

Practical notes:

• Book timeslots in advance — they're strict about entry
• Return trail is uphill in heat — Lee learned this the hard way
• Bring plenty of water for your dog — Joey ran short on a warm day
• Bus access from Bled area works well if you don't want to park at the gorge

Evening Runs & Slow Days at Bohinj

Back in Bohinj, life slowed down again. I started evening runs around the lake — possibly one of the most beautiful places I've ever run. No crowds. No noise. Just mountains and water.

On our final Bohinj days: Mostnica Gorge (quieter than Vintgar — Joey appreciated the slower pace), a boat across the lake, coffee, ice cream, and reading while rain rolled through the mountains outside the cabin.

Pokljuka Plateau

Locals kept recommending Pokljuka Plateau — and the drive alone was worth it.

Winding mountain roads, tiny alpine villages, views everywhere. Down at the lake it felt like spring; up here, winter was still hanging on with snow on the ground.

We hiked through forests and quiet villages, then stopped at a mountain hut for coffee and traditional soup. Simple moments — the ones you remember most.

Build slack into the schedule. This trip works because it's slow.

Travelling Slovenia with a Dog

Joey came everywhere — trails, cabin, car, lakeside walks. Slovenia felt genuinely dog-friendly.

What worked:

• Cabin with river access near Bohinj
• Easy waterfall and gorge trails (watch heat and water on longer days)
• Quiet Bohinj evenings — less stress than busy resort towns

What I'd do differently:

• More water for Joey on Vintgar return hike
• Earlier starts on popular spots (Bled, Vintgar)

The Feeling of This Trip
