Brda Wine Country Guide | Slow Travel in Slovenia

After mountains, rivers and adventure… Slovenia had one final surprise waiting for us.

A peaceful wine region hidden between rolling hills, tiny villages, and some of the best food and wine I'd had in a very long time. For the last two days of the trip, Joey and I slowed things down completely in Goriška Brda — Slovenia's answer to Tuscany, without the crowds.

Leaving the Soča Valley

After several days in the Soča Valley, we headed south. The drive itself was incredible — mountains slowly fading as the landscape transformed into rolling vineyards and wine valleys.

At times we even crossed into Italy without realising it. This entire border region feels beautifully relaxed.

First Impressions of Brda

I'd heard very little about Slovenia's wine country before this trip. Which honestly makes no sense — because this place is stunning.

It feels like a quieter version of Tuscany. Without the crowds.

Everywhere you look: rolling green hills, vineyards, tiny hilltop villages, and roads that make you want to keep driving forever.

Also known as: Goriška Brda, Brda Hills, Slovenian Collio (Italian side of the border shares the wine tradition).

Wine Farm Lunch

The only thing I didn't realise: most wine farms don't really open before midday. So after some very unsuccessful morning wine hunting, I eventually booked lunch at a local wine estate.

And honestly — this turned into one of the best days of the entire trip.

I ended up spending almost the entire afternoon there. Sometimes solo travel gives you these unexpected moments where time just disappears.

Wine Estate Accommodation

That evening we arrived at accommodation on a wine farm. At this point I think Joey had fully accepted that this trip had become more about relaxation than hiking.

The rest of the evening was simple: walking through small villages, looking for dinner, watching the sunset over the vineyards.

Staying on a farm puts you in the landscape — morning walks through vines, dogs welcome, and zero need to rush anywhere.

E-Mountain Biking Through the Vineyards

The next morning I rented an e-mountain bike to explore the region properly. This might be one of the best ways to experience Brda.

The route took me through vineyards, quiet villages, forest sections, and endless rolling hills.

There was one thing I underestimated: the hills. There were a LOT of hills. Thankfully the e-bike was an absolute machine.

Cycling through this landscape felt incredible. I stopped halfway for lunch in a small historic town — Slovenia just kept surprising me.

The second half became hotter and more challenging, but somehow even more beautiful.

Šmartno — one of Brda's prettiest fortified hill villages. Perfect halfway coffee or lunch stop on a ride.

Final Wine Tasting

Back at the wine estate, I finished the trip with a private wine tasting — local wine, cheese, cured meats, and one final Slovenian sunset.

Honestly. Not a bad way to end a trip.

Final Reflection

Before visiting Slovenia, I mostly associated the country with mountains and lakes. Brda completely changed that.

Peaceful. Warm. Authentic. A place where life slows down. After days of hiking, rafting and exploring, it was the perfect ending.

Good food. Good wine. Beautiful landscapes. Nowhere to rush to.

Slovenia became one of the biggest travel surprises I've had in years. I'll be back.
