Matka Canyon is a gorge day hike from Skopje — rocky cliff paths, summer heat and optional kayak or boat to Vrelo Cave. Lee's visit was a half-to-full day outing, not a multi-day trek.

Packing rules for Matka Canyon
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Grippy shoes | Uneven cliff path, no railing in places |
| 1.5–2 L water | Vendors exist but spacing is inconsistent |
| Cash (MKD) | Parking, boats, snacks — cards rarely work |
| Sun protection | Exposed sections hit 30 °C+ in summer |
| Offline maps | Signal drops on side trails |
| Light pack | You're not camping — keep it minimal |
Daypack
15–25 L is enough — water, snacks, camera, spare shirt and power bank. Lee used roughly a 15 L pack and that felt right.
Footwear
Trail running shoes or light hiking boots — not flip-flops or city sneakers. The main path is rocky and narrow with drop-offs on one side.
Water & hydration
- At least 1 L per person minimum; 1.5–2 L if hiking the full canyon or doing a monastery detour
- Freeze one bottle overnight for a cold start
- Light snacks: fruit, nuts, protein bar
Sun & layers
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (water glare is bright)
- Breathable shirt and hiking pants/shorts
- Optional light layer for shoulder-season mornings
- Bug spray — Lee wished he'd packed it
Navigation & safety
- Download offline maps before leaving Skopje
- Screenshot trail markers if exploring side paths
- Power bank — no plugs at the canyon
- Hand sanitizer and tissues for basic restrooms
Photography & drone
The canyon is cinematic — cliffs, turquoise water and monastery views. Fly respectfully; avoid crowds and religious sites.
Kayak / boat extras
If renting a kayak or taking the cave boat:
- Small dry bag for phone and wallet (rentals don't provide one)
- Quick-dry towel optional
- Spare shirt after a hot hike
What you don't need
- Tent, sleeping bag or stove
- Trekking poles (nice-to-have only)
- Heavy multi-day pack
- Large amounts of MKD — small bills are enough
Related planning
- Itinerary — half-day vs full-day rhythm
- Difficulty — cliff path exposure
- Getting there — bus 60 or rental car
- Food — riverside lunch stops
