Combining Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Island Peak is one of the great Khumbu itineraries — turquoise high lakes, the classic EBC approach through Sherpa villages, and a 6,189 m summit extension for hikers who want mountaineering without an 8,000 m commitment.
Lee spent 22 days in Nepal on this arc. This is a planning guide with route structure, permits and acclimatisation notes.

Quick Facts
| Region | Khumbu (Everest), Nepal |
| Lee's duration | 22 days (trek + climbing extension) |
| Style | Teahouse trekking + guided Island Peak climb |
| Start / finish | Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) |
| Highlights | Gokyo Ri, Gokyo lakes, EBC, Kala Patthar, Island Peak |
| Highest point | Island Peak summit 6,189 m (Imja Tse) |
| EBC elevation | ~5,364 m |
| Difficulty | Challenging trek; expert with Island Peak |
| Best months | Mar–May, Oct–Nov |
| Permits | TIMS, Sagarmatha NP, Island Peak climbing permit |
Important: Island Peak is not a "bonus day hike." It requires glacier travel, crampons, fixed lines and a reputable operator or guide team. Build acclimatisation before you commit.
Why Combine Gokyo, EBC and Island Peak?

Most hikers choose either the classic EBC trail or the Gokyo side valley. Linking both gives you:
- Gokyo's turquoise lakes and the view from Gokyo Ri (5,357 m)
- The cultural rhythm of Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Khumbu villages
- Everest Base Camp and optional Kala Patthar for classic Everest views
- A logical mountaineering finish on Island Peak in the Imja Valley
The trade-off is time and altitude exposure. A 22-day itinerary is sensible — shorter schedules risk rushing acclimatisation.
Suggested 22-Day Structure
This is a planning framework, not a rigid script. Your operator, weather and how you feel at altitude will shift rest days.
Phase 1 — Lukla to Namche (Days 1–3)
| Band | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Fly Kathmandu → Lukla; trek to Phakding |
| Day 2 | Phakding → Namche Bazaar (steep finish; first big altitude jump) |
| Day 3 | Acclimatisation — hike to Everest View Hotel / Khumjung, sleep low in Namche |
Phase 2 — Gokyo Valley (Days 4–8)
| Band | Focus |
|---|---|
| Days 4–5 | Namche → Dole → Machhermo (gradual climb on Gokyo route) |
| Day 6 | Machhermo → Gokyo; afternoon at third lake |
| Day 7 | Gokyo Ri sunrise; rest or short exploration |
| Day 8 | Cross Cho La Pass (5,420 m) to Dzongla or backtrack and rejoin main trail — route choice depends on season, snow and guide advice |

Cho La note: In spring and autumn this pass is a standard link between Gokyo and the EBC trail, but it is not trivial — crampons and early starts are common when icy. Have a backup plan if conditions are poor.
Phase 3 — Everest Base Camp (Days 9–14)
| Band | Focus |
|---|---|
| Days 9–10 | Trek toward Lobuche via Thaknak / Periche corridor |
| Day 11 | Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp |
| Day 12 | Kala Patthar (5,545 m) sunrise; descend to lower village for recovery |
| Days 13–14 | Descend toward Dingboche / Chhukung — buffer / rest before Island Peak |
Phase 4 — Island Peak (Days 15–20)
| Band | Focus |
|---|---|
| Days 15–16 | Trek to Island Peak Base Camp; gear check and skills refresh |
| Day 17 | Move to high camp (~5,500 m) |
| Day 18 | Summit day — alpine start, fixed lines on the headwall |
| Days 19–20 | Weather / contingency day; descend to villages |

Phase 5 — Exit (Days 21–22)
| Band | Focus |
|---|---|
| Days 21–22 | Descend to Lukla; fly to Kathmandu (weather delays common) |
Acclimatisation Principles
Altitude sickness ends trips — respect the schedule.
- Sleep low, hike high on rest days (Namche, Dingboche)
- Do not jump more than 500 m sleeping altitude per day above 3,000 m when you can avoid it
- Watch for headache, nausea, loss of appetite — descend if symptoms worsen
- Hydrate, but don't over-hydrate blindly; eat even when appetite drops
- Build two contingency days into Lukla flights and summit attempts
If you've only trekked at sea level before, add training hikes with elevation gain and consider a shorter Khumbu trip before committing to Island Peak.
Trekking vs Island Peak climb
This itinerary stitches two different trip types together. Plan them separately — then merge the calendar.
| Trekking phases (Days 1–14) | Island Peak block (Days 15–20) | |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Teahouse-to-teahouse — bed and meals in lodges | Camping at base camp / high camp with a climbing crew |
| Permits | Trek registration + Sagarmatha National Park entry only | Adds NMA climbing permit + garbage deposit |
| Guide model | Guide and porter optional for experienced hikers | Licensed climbing guide required under Nepal mountaineering rules |
| Technical demand | Long days and altitude; Cho La may need crampons when icy | Glacier travel, fixed lines, jumar on the headwall |
| Insurance band | Trekking to ~5,500 m (Kala Patthar) | Mountaineering cover to 6,500 m — read the fine print |
| Exit without climb? | Yes — fly home from Lukla after EBC / Kala Patthar | Only sensible if you never booked climb permits or paid deposits |
Trek-only cut: Gokyo + EBC without Island Peak drops the climbing permit stack, mountaineering gear rental and summit-night logistics. Decide before you pay operator deposits — insurance and packing change materially above 6,000 m.
Permit stack — trekking vs climbing paperwork
Confirm current fees with your agency — Nepal updates rules and card names faster than forum posts. Your operator should hand you physical permits in Kathmandu before the Lukla flight.
Trekking layer (Gokyo + EBC — required even if you skip the climb)
| Document | Purpose | Trek-only? | Full arc + Island Peak? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khumbu trek registration | Trekker tracking — often a TIMS card and/or Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit depending on current rules | Yes | Yes |
| Sagarmatha National Park entry | Conservation fee for Khumbu inside SNP boundaries | Yes | Yes |
Climbing layer (Island Peak only)
| Document | Purpose | Trek-only? | Full arc + Island Peak? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Island Peak (Imja Tse) climbing permit | Issued through the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) via a registered expedition | No | Yes |
| Garbage / environmental deposit | Refundable on return of waste from the climb — operator registers and collects | No | Yes |
Where paperwork gets checked
| Location | What rangers / officials look for |
|---|---|
| Kathmandu (pre-trek) | Operator purchases trek, park and (if booked) climbing permits against your passport |
| Monjo / Namche corridor | Park entry and trek registration — keep permits in a dry bag you can reach quickly |
| Island Peak Base Camp | Climbing permit verified before your summit rotation |
Kathmandu pickup workflow
| Step | What happens | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Passport check | Operator enters your details into permit systems | Names and passport numbers must match exactly — typos block you on trail |
| 2. Trek + park permits | TIMS / Khumbu registration + Sagarmatha NP entry purchased | Ask for photocopies; carry originals in your daypack pocket on check days |
| 3. Island Peak permit (if booked) | NMA climbing permit issued through registered guide company | Confirm Imja Tse and dates before you fly to Lukla |
| 4. Garbage deposit | Registered against your climbing permit | Keep the receipt — refunds go through your operator on return |
Do not plan to buy Island Peak permits independently at a trail checkpoint. Under current Nepal mountaineering rules you need a registered guide company for the climbing block — verify latest regulations with your agency, not a 3-year-old blog post.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers on fit, features, and buying — open a question to read more.
Yes. A Gokyo + EBC itinerary needs only the trekking layer — Khumbu trek registration and Sagarmatha National Park entry. Drop the NMA climbing permit and garbage deposit if you are not attempting Imja Tse.
Rules shift. Many operators now issue a Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit instead of (or alongside) a classic TIMS card for Everest-region treks. Your agency confirms the current card before purchase — do not assume a 2019 forum answer is still valid.
Treat no as the safe default. Island Peak permits are tied to registered expeditions under NMA rules, and summit day involves glacier travel and fixed lines. Interview operators on acclimatisation schedule and turnaround policy — not just headline price.
Trekking paperwork gets you to EBC and Kala Patthar (~5,545 m). Island Peak pushes you into mountaineering altitude (~6,189 m summit). Policies that say "trekking to 6,000 m" may still exclude roped glacier travel — confirm helicopter evacuation and summit altitude before you pay deposits.
Guides, Operators and Island Peak Logistics
For the trekking sections, many experienced hikers use a guide and porter or join a small group — teahouses are easy to navigate, but local knowledge helps on passes.
For Island Peak, budget for:
- Climbing guide and assistant(s)
- Group climbing gear (ropes, anchors where needed)
- Personal hire gear if you don't own crampons, harness, helmet
- Oxygen is usually not required for Island Peak, but confirm medical kit
Interview operators on acclimatisation schedule, summit-day turnaround time, and what happens if Cho La is closed.
Teahouse Trekking — What to Expect
- Lodges offer bed + meals; prices rise with altitude
- Menu fatigue is real — bring favourite snacks from Kathmandu
- Charging electronics costs extra; carry a power bank
- Hot showers are paid luxuries; laundry rarely dries quickly
- Carry cash (NPR) — cards are unreliable on trail
Typical daily rhythm: breakfast → walk → lunch stop → afternoon arrival → dal bhat dinner.
Packing — Trek vs Climb
Use the Packing List Builder.
Trekking core:
- 40–55 L pack (porter-friendly if hiring support)
- Broken-in waterproof boots
- Down jacket rated for –10 °C evenings at altitude
- Shell layers, sun hat, glacier sunglasses
- Sleeping bag rated to at least –15 °C for Island Peak high camp (or confirm lodge blankets + bag combo)
- Water purification and 2–3 L capacity
Island Peak add-ons:
- Mountaineering boots (often hired in Kathmandu)
- Crampons, harness, helmet, ascender / jumar
- Headlamp with spare batteries for summit night
- Lightweight insulated gloves + summit mitts
Budget (USD Planning Model)
Very rough per-person bands excluding international flights:
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Guided trek + Island Peak package | USD 2,000–3,500+ |
| Kathmandu hotels (pre/post) | USD 30–80 per night |
| Lukla flights (return) | USD 350–450 |
| Meals / extras on trail | USD 25–45 per day |
| Tips (guide, porter, climbing crew) | USD 150–300+ |
| Gear rental (crampons, boots) | USD 80–150 |
Use the Trek Cost Calculator to model your style (porter vs self-carry, hotel tier).
Best Season
| Window | Conditions |
|---|---|
| Mar–May | Spring — warming, rhododendrons, busy trails, stable mornings |
| Oct–Nov | Autumn — clearest views, cold nights, peak demand |
| Jun–Sep | Monsoon — heavy rain lower down; not recommended |
| Dec–Feb | Cold, quiet; pass/climb conditions harder |
Gokyo + EBC vs EBC Only
| Gokyo + EBC + IP | EBC only | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | ~18–24 days | ~12–14 days |
| Scenery | Lakes + classic Khumbu | Classic Khumbu |
| Passes | Cho La possible | None required |
| Summit | Island Peak 6,189 m | Kala Patthar 5,545 m |
| Fitness | High | Moderate–challenging |
Safety Notes
- Travel insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and mountaineering altitude
- AMS, HACE and HAPE are medical emergencies — descend first
- Glacier travel on Island Peak — crevasse and fixed-line competence required
- Lukla flight delays can cascade — keep buffer days before international connections
- Drink treated water; hygiene slips cause stomach issues that ruin acclimatisation
First-hand Khumbu notes
These are the details that matter once your operator confirms dates — the stuff generic Nepal blogs skip.
Lukla flights and delay buffers
Tenzing-Hillary Airport is weather-dependent. Morning fog in the Khumbu or Kathmandu can cancel the first wave of Twin Otters — sometimes for days.
- Book international flights home with 2–3 buffer days after your scheduled Lukla return
- Carry cash NPR for extra lodge nights in Lukla or Kathmandu if you're stuck
- Weight limits on Lukla flights are strict — wear your boots and jacket on your body
Lee's group lost a full day to weather on the return leg. Everyone who had tight connections regretted it.
Cho La go / no-go
The Cho La pass (~5,420 m) links the Gokyo valley back toward the main EBC trail near Lobuche. It is not technical climbing, but it is glacier travel with crampons and exposed if weather turns.
| Signal | Action |
|---|---|
| Clear morning, firm snow, guide confident | Proceed with early start |
| Overnight snow, whiteout, slow group pace | Skip Cho La — descend via Phortse / Namche loop instead |
| AMS symptoms in the group | No pass — descend first |
Your itinerary should name a Plan B before you leave Kathmandu. Operators who treat Cho La as guaranteed are overselling.
Island Peak summit night
Summit day on Imja Tse is not a long trek day — it is a mountaineering shift:
- Midnight wake-up at Island Peak Base Camp or high camp
- Headlamp, harness, crampons on before you leave the tent
- Fixed lines on the headwall — jumar technique matters; practise in Kathmandu if you can
- Summit push 4–6 hours for fit groups; turnaround times are strict above 6,000 m
- Descent to base camp same day — legs feel like concrete by dinner
Treat the climb as Day 1 of a mountaineering course, not a bonus photo stop after EBC.
Kathmandu prep week
Before you fly to Lukla, use Kathmandu for:
- Gear rental — boots, crampons, harness (check fit with socks you'll actually wear)
- Permit pickup — see permit stack above; collect trek, park and (if booked) Island Peak permits before Lukla
- Cash exchange — small denominations for trail tips and snacks
- One rest day — not sightseeing at full pace if you're coming from sea level
Thamel gear shops are convenient but busy — go with your guide or a trusted operator contact, not the first rental desk that waves at you.
Gokyo-only vs EBC-only vs full arc
| Itinerary | Days (typical) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gokyo Lakes + Gokyo Ri only | 12–14 | Turquoise lakes, fewer crowds than the EBC main trail |
| Gokyo + EBC (no Island Peak) | 16–18 | Classic Khumbu without mountaineering logistics |
| Full arc + Island Peak (Lee's trip) | ~22 | Summit attempt after proper acclimatisation |
If Island Peak is optional, read difficulty and drop the climbing block before you pay deposits — insurance and gear change materially above 6,000 m.

Frequently asked questions
Can I skip Island Peak and still do Gokyo + EBC?
Yes — many hikers end at Kala Patthar or EBC. Island Peak adds cost, permits and a mountaineering block; drop it if your goal is trekking only.
Is 18 days enough?
Possible for fast acclimatisers with a flexible operator, but 22 days is the safer planning number — especially if Cho La weather forces a reroute.
Do I need previous climbing experience?
Island Peak is often sold as "beginner 6,000 m" — you still need comfort with crampons, harness and fixed lines. A guided course day in Kathmandu helps more than extra gym sessions.
What insurance do I actually need?
Helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu plus mountaineering altitude cover up to 6,500 m. Read the policy fine print — "trekking to 6,000 m" is not the same as roped glacier travel.
