Trail endpoints
| International gateway | Kathmandu (Tribhuvan Airport) |
| Trek start / finish | Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) |
| First night | Phakding (typical) |
Step 1: International → Kathmandu
| Step | Notes |
|---|---|
| Fly to KTM | Tribhuvan International Airport |
| Visa | On arrival or e-visa — check current Nepal rules |
| Pre-trek nights | 2–3 in Kathmandu for briefing, gear, permits |
Step 2: Kathmandu → Lukla
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Airport | Tribhuvan domestic terminal (separate from international) |
| Flight time | ~35 minutes |
| Cost | ~$175–225 one way ($350–450 return) |
| Airlines | Tara Air, Summit Air, Sita Air (schedules vary) |
| Season | Mar–May, Oct–Nov most reliable |
Critical: Lukla flights operate early morning — weather windows close by mid-morning. Delays of 1–3 days are common in peak season.
Lukla airport reality
- Short uphill runway — infamous among aviators
- Weight limits on baggage — confirm with airline (~15 kg checked typical)
- Porter arrangements usually handled by operator at Lukla
- Immediate trail start — Phakding 2–3 hours walk
On-trail access
After Lukla, everything is on foot (or yak/porter):
| Checkpoint | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Monjo | Sagarmatha National Park entry |
| Namche | TIMS / permit checks; acclimatisation hub |
| Gokyo route | Branches north from Namche area |
| Cho La | Links Gokyo to EBC trail (seasonal) |
| Chhukung | Gateway to Island Peak valley |
No roads in the Khumbu — helicopter is the only mechanical exit.
Island Peak access
From Dingboche / Chhukung, trek south into the Imja Valley:
- Island Peak Base Camp — tent staging
- High camp — summit-eve bivouac
- Descent back to villages → Lukla
Operator handles camp logistics and permit paperwork for the climb.
Exit and delays
| Risk | Mitigation |
|---|---|
| Lukla weather cancellations | 2+ buffer days before international flight |
| Summit weather | Built-in contingency days (Phase 4) |
| Helicopter evacuation | Insurance must cover — no roads |
Pre-departure checklist
