On the Khumbu, you eat at teahouses — dal bhat, noodles, eggs and increasingly expensive menus as altitude rises. Island Peak camps are operator-catered. Menu fatigue is real by Day 14.

Daily food rhythm
| Meal | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Teahouse | Eggs, porridge, chapati, tea |
| Lunch | Trail teahouse | Dal bhat, noodles, momos |
| Dinner | Teahouse | Dal bhat (refill!) — best value |
| Snacks | Carried | Critical above Namche |
Budget: $25–45/day on trail (meals + drinks).
Dal bhat — your best friend
The Nepali staple: rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, pickles.
- Unlimited refills at most lodges — best calories per dollar
- Available at every altitude
- Eat even when appetite drops — altitude kills hunger
Buy in Kathmandu
Stock up before Lukla:
- Energy bars, nuts, chocolate
- Favourite tea / coffee sachets
- Electrolyte tablets
- Hard candies for trail
- Yak cheese (Namche also sells)
Namche has the best trail shops — supplement there if you under-packed.
Altitude menu reality
| Village band | Meal cost trend |
|---|---|
| Lukla–Phakding | Cheapest |
| Namche | Moderate; best variety |
| Gokyo / Lobuche / Gorak Shep | Expensive; limited menu |
Garlic soup — local AMS folk remedy (evidence mixed, but warming).
Appetite at altitude
- You won't feel hungry above 4,500 m — eat anyway
- Carb-heavy meals digest easier than heavy protein
- Avoid alcohol until after the trek — worsens AMS
- Hydrate steadily — 3–4 L/day, but don't over-hydrate blindly
Island Peak camp food
| Camp | Meals |
|---|---|
| Base camp | Operator cooks — simple hot food |
| High camp | Light dinner before summit; early breakfast or snack |
| Summit day | Snacks in pockets — gels, bars, candy |
Confirm meal plan with operator before booking.
Hygiene tips
- Treat all water — purification tablets or filter
- Hand sanitiser before meals
- Stomach bugs ruin acclimatisation — be careful with salads lower down
- Avoid raw vegetables in Lukla/Phakding if sensitive
Comfort food wins
- Fresh apple pie in Namche (famous trail treat)
- Hot lemon ginger tea at every lodge
- Momos (dumplings) as lunch variety
- Post-trek Thamel dinner in Kathmandu
