Day-by-day notes
Day 1 — Ngubu Hut
- Register at Storms River Mouth
- Gentle introduction to cliff paths and ocean views
- Social hut evening — many groups start the same window
- Early night; save legs for Day 4
My Day 1: Registering at Storms River Mouth felt ceremonial — then a short, scenic leg to Ngubu. We had time to sort food and meet the other groups starting the same window.
Day 2 — Scott Hut
- More sustained coastal walking
- First serious river mouth awareness
- Check water levels with rangers if unsure
Day 3 — Oakhurst Hut
- Rhythm settles in — forest gorges and headlands
- Good day to dry wet gear from crossings
- Rest before the long stage
Day 4 — Andre Hut (crux)
- ~13.8 km — longest day by far
- Start at first light if permitted
- Multiple river crossings — can mean hours of waiting after rain
- Manage heat, pace and group morale
Day 5 — Nature's Valley
- Shorter distance but tired legs
- Final river sections
- Finish at the beach — pre-book shuttle
- Allow buffer before evening flights
River crossings
Several days cross rivers at the coast:
- Never cross alone if water is high or fast
- Wait for SANParks guidance when flagged unsafe
- Factor delays into Day 4 especially
- Wet shoes are normal — dry bags essential

Frequently asked questions
Can I change my hut nights?
No — SANParks assigns the standard west-to-east sequence. You hike Ngubu → Scott → Oakhurst → Andre regardless of preference.
Which day is hardest?
Day 4 (~13.8 km) is the distance crux. River waits can make it feel longer than the map suggests.
Can I skip a hut?
No. You must follow your booked sequence and check in at each hut.
What time do most groups finish Day 5?
Afternoon — but river delays on earlier days push finish times. Tell your shuttle driver "flexible."
What I wished I'd known
- Day 1 feels easy — do not burn legs on photo stops; save energy for Day 4
- River waits are part of the itinerary — not an exception
- Screenshot hut names offline — battery dies faster than you expect on Day 4
