Book and confirm rules on SANParks Otter Trail before you invite friends. Reservations go through the SANParks booking portal. Storms River Mouth registration and briefing happen at Storms River camp.
Hut sequence (west → east)
| Night | Hut | Day distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ngubu Hut | ~4.8 km from Storms River |
| 2 | Scott Hut | ~7.9 km |
| 3 | Oakhurst Hut | ~8.6 km |

| 5 | Finish Nature's Valley | ~6.8 km (no hut) |
You cannot choose arbitrary hut nights — SANParks allocates the standard 5-day window for your booking.
Hut-by-hut overview
Each hut is a basic SANParks shelter — not a hotel. Expect wooden bunks, shared ablutions and a communal kitchen area. Mattresses are provided; everything else is yours.
| Hut | Setting | My notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ngubu | First night, close to Storms River | Short Day 1 — social first evening with other groups starting the same window |
| Scott | Coastal contouring day | Good water access; first real river-crossing awareness |
| Oakhurst | Forest gorge mix | Quieter middle night — dry gear before the long stage |
| Andre | Before final day | Crux hut after Day 4 — everyone arrives tired; celebrate quietly |
Hut names and distances match the official SANParks route description. Treat published kilometre figures as planning numbers — photo stops and river waits add hours.
What huts feel like in practice
I hiked with friends over five days. The hut rhythm becomes the social backbone of the trip — you see the same groups at river mouths and shared kitchens.
Ngubu (Night 1) sets the tone. After a short warm-up from Storms River Mouth, most groups arrive mid-afternoon with energy to spare. Use the time to organise food, test your stove and confirm tomorrow's river conditions with rangers.
Scott and Oakhurst (Nights 2–3) are where the trail finds its rhythm. Coastal wind, forest shade and steady distances. This is when wet socks from river crossings become normal — hang gear to dry and accept that perfection is not the goal.
Andre (Night 4) follows the longest stage (~13.8 km). Groups arrive later than expected if rivers were slow. Start dinner early, hydrate and get horizontal — Day 5 still has river sections before Nature's Valley.
What huts provide
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|

Expect dorm-style shared space — earplugs recommended.
What you must carry
- Sleeping bag (season-appropriate)
- Stove, fuel, cookware
- All food for 5 days
- Rubbish bags — pack out everything
- Toilet paper, hand sanitizer
- Dry bags for river crossings
See packing list.
Booking rhythm
- Create a SANParks account — you cannot book as a guest for competitive dates
- Monitor opening dates for your target season (often many months ahead)
- Book the moment the window opens — demand exceeds supply every year
- Confirm start date, hut allocation and conservation fees in your confirmation email
- Check age/fitness minimums for your group on the official Otter page
Easter and autumn school holidays fill fastest. If your dates are flexible, shoulder weeks in late summer or early spring are slightly easier — but still not easy.
What your booking includes
SANParks hut fees cover shelter and mattresses for the fixed four-night sequence. They do not include meals, bedding, stove fuel or transport. Conservation levies are bundled into published tariffs — always verify the total at checkout rather than estimating from old blog posts.
If someone drops out
Group bookings are painful to modify. Read SANParks cancellation terms before you pay — substitutions and date changes are limited. Assign one organised person in your group to hold the booking reference and communicate with the park office.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wild camp on the Otter Trail?
No. The route is hut-to-hut only. Wild camping is not permitted in Tsitsikamma — you must use the SANParks hut sequence on your booking.
Do huts have electricity or charging points?
Assume limited or no power. Carry a power bank for phone and headlamp. Treat offline maps as mandatory, not optional.
Are huts heated?
Basic shelter only. Bring a sleeping bag rated for the season — coastal nights can be cool even in summer.
Can I hike solo?
Verify current rules on the official Otter page. River-crossing safety is easier with at least one partner.
What if a river crossing is closed?
Wait for ranger guidance. Groups sometimes wait hours. Build buffer into Day 4 and tell your shuttle driver the finish time is approximate.
What I wished I'd known
- Book the shuttle before you celebrate getting a permit — Nature's Valley is tiny
- Pack camp sandals — wet river shoes are miserable in huts
- Earplugs are not optional in shared dorm-style huts
- Split group food weight fairly before Day 1 — resentment shows up on Day 4
