The Otter Trail is fully self-catered — SANParks huts have no meals, no shop. You carry five days of food, cook on a gas stove and secure everything from baboons.

Official resources
There is no shop on the Otter Trail. Buy groceries in Port Elizabeth, George or Storms River before entering Tsitsikamma National Park. SANParks rules for self-catering and waste are on the Otter Trail information page.
Daily food rhythm
| Meal | Approach |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Quick oats, coffee, bars — early start on Day 4 |
| Lunch | Trail snacks, wraps, biltong — eaten on the move |
| Dinner | Stove-cooked one-pot at hut |
| Snacks | Nuts, chocolate, electrolytes between huts |
Budget: ZAR 600–1,000 per person for 5 days.
Shop before Day 1
Buy in Port Elizabeth, George or Storms River before entering the park:
| Category | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Carbs | Pasta, instant oats, couscous, instant rice |
| Protein | Biltong, tuna pouches, salami, dehydrated meals |
| Snacks | Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate |
| Drinks | Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, electrolyte sachets |
| Extras | Olive oil sachets, spice mix, salt, pepper |
Weight matters — dehydrate where possible.
Shopping strategy
Port Elizabeth and George have the best supermarket choice if you are driving the Garden Route. Storms River village works for last-minute top-ups the night before Day 1 — but do not rely on it for your full five-day shop.
I bought most groceries in PE before driving to Storms River. Split the shop list across your group: one person handles carbs, another snacks and drinks, someone else stove fuel and shared spices. We repacked into portion bags at the guesthouse to keep morning-of chaos low.
Calorie planning for Day 4
Day 4 (~13.8 km) is the calorie crux. I packed extra bars, biltong and electrolyte sachets specifically for that stage. Groups that under-cater on snacks feel the long afternoon on exposed coastal sections.
A simple rule: add 20% more snacks than you think you need for Days 3–4. River waits burn time and morale without moving you forward.
Sample 5-day menu
| Day | Dinner idea | Lunch on trail |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pasta + tuna (short day) | Wraps, fruit |
| 2 | Couscous + salami | Biltong, nuts |
| 3 | Instant rice + sauce pouch | Bars, dried fruit |
| 4 | Hearty dehydrated meal (long day) | Extra snacks, electrolytes |
| 5 | Light breakfast; celebrate in Nature's Valley | Remaining bars |
Adjust portions for group size and appetite — Day 4 needs extra calories.

Post-trail reward
Nature's Valley and nearby Plettenberg Bay / Knysna have proper restaurants — book a big meal for Day 5 evening.

Frequently asked questions
Is there drinking water at every hut?
Generally yes at or near huts, but carry 2 L+ on hot coastal sections between sources. I still packed a small filter as backup.
Can I buy food if I run out?
No. There is no trail shop. Storms River village before Day 1 is your last realistic supermarket run.
How do I cook in shared huts?
Small gas stoves on outdoor or designated kitchen areas — no open fires. Start dinner early on busy nights when multiple groups share space.
What about baboons?
Never leave food unattended. Cook inside or in designated areas, close doors and windows, and pack rubbish in sealed bags.
What I wished I'd known
- Portion bags at the guesthouse beat repacking at the trailhead in the rain
- Extra snacks for Day 4 matter more than a fancy dinner on Day 2
- Shared olive oil and spice across friends saves weight and improves morale
