Getting to the Mullerthal Trail: Echternach & Luxembourg Access

Echternach is the main gateway to the Mullerthal Trail — Luxembourg's oldest town and the start of Route 1. Other trailheads include Berdorf, Mullerthal, Hersberg and Scheidgen, but most hikers begin or loop through Echternach.

Getting to Echternach

By car

• Luxembourg City → Echternach: ~40 minutes via A1 or E29
• Parking near trailheads — generally free or low cost
• Lee's approach: drove from Amsterdam after work (traffic extended the trip — plan buffer time)

Useful if you want a car stash in Echternach for tent swaps and resupply (Lee changed tents and clothes from his car on Day 2).

By bus (free in Luxembourg)

• Lines 110, 111, 112 from Luxembourg City
• Journey ~1 hour
• Public transport is free nationwide — one of the trail's best budget perks

By train + bus

1. Train to Luxembourg City (connections from Brussels, Paris, Trier, Germany)
2. Transfer to bus 110/111/112 to Echternach

On-trail transport

• Free buses between towns — useful if you need to skip a stage or return to Echternach
• No cable cars or mountain railways — this is lowland forest hiking
• Lee finished Day 6 in rain and drove to Vianden instead of camping — having a car helped

Trailheads beyond Echternach

The three main routes can start at different villages. Check your itinerary and book accommodation at the correct end point — Lee's loop returned to Echternach but staged gear from his car there.

Practical tips

• Arrive before dark if camping — Lee's Day 0 pitch setup in rain with phone torch was stressful
• Download offline maps before leaving town
• Luxembourg is small — even "remote" trail sections are never far from a village bus stop
