Fimmvörðuháls is challenging but doable for fit hikers — not technical, but steep, exposed and weather-dependent. Lee hiked it as the finale after six days on Laugavegur when legs were already tired.

| Overall | Challenging |
| Technical | None — marked trail |
| Distance | 22–25 km |

What makes it hard
- Steep early climb — relentless ascent from Skógar waterfall section
- Exposure — few shelters between trailheads
- Weather — rain, wind, fog, snow patches even in July
- Terrain — volcanic ash, slippery descents, snow bridges
- Fatigue — especially if hiked after Laugavegur
Who is it for?
Great fit if you:
- Can hike 20 km with 1,000 m gain in a day
- Are comfortable in cold, wet, windy conditions
- Have trekking poles and know how to use them
- Can commit to a point-to-point day with no easy exit
Reconsider if you:
- Are new to long-distance hiking
- Plan a one-day push without weather buffer
- Fear exposure on open ridges
- Arrive without waterproof kit
