What to eat on Lago di Sorapis — pack lunch from Cortina, trail snacks, Rifugio Vandelli meals and cash for hut food.

There are no water refill points on the trail to Lago di Sorapis — pack 1.5–2 L and a lakeside lunch. Rifugio Vandelli near the lake sells snacks and meals but gets busy and prefers cash. This page owns food/water — not parking (see getting there).

Day hike food plan
| When | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Cortina café or hotel | Eat before driving to pass |
| On trail | Bars, nuts, fruit | Fuel for ladder queues |
| At lake | Packed lunch | Sit pad optional — epic view |
| Rifugio treat | Soup, beer (optional) | Cash only sometimes |
| After | Cortina dinner | Lee's post-AV1 ritual |
Budget: €5–15 trail food · €5–15 hut extras
Buy in Cortina d'Ampezzo
Stock up the night before:
- Sandwiches or bread + cheese/salami
- Energy bars, nuts, chocolate
- 2 L water (or 1.5 L + filter backup)
- Fruit — apples survive a daypack well
Supermarkets and bakeries in town — no need to overpay at the pass.
Rifugio Vandelli
- 5 min from lake — convenient but crowded midday
- Meals and snacks at premium prices
- Bring EUR cash — card acceptance limited
- Can run low on supplies on busy days — don't rely on it
Hydration tips
- Start drinking at the trailhead
- Dolomite sun is strong — electrolytes help
- No streams to count on mid-trail — carry full amount
Lakeside lunch
Lee's reward after ladder queues — turquoise water makes any sandwich taste better. Pack out all rubbish. On the day I hiked, the Vandelli terrace was packed by early afternoon, so I ate on a rock shelf ten minutes before the hut and bought only a coffee at the counter — that kept the lunch break short without skipping the view.
If you start late from Passo Tre Croci, treat the packed lunch as mandatory fuel rather than optional picnic theatre. The exposed ladder sections and photo queues burn time, and arriving hungry at a sold-out snack window is a bad trade on a day hike with no mid-trail shops.
What I actually carried
- One bakery sandwich from Cortina plus two dense bars
- A small bag of salted nuts for the ladder queues
- 2 L water in soft flasks (finished most of it before leaving the lake)
- EUR cash for one hut treat, not a full meal plan
Dietary notes
- Limited hut options for strict diets — pack what you need
- Gluten-free bars widely available in Cortina supermarkets
- Alcohol at rifugio — save for after the cables

Frequently asked questions
Should food be bought before the trail?
Yes — shop in the nearest town with a proper supermarket before starting Lago di Sorapis. On self-supported carrying your own kit, on-trail resupply is often limited or absent.
How much extra food is sensible?
One extra day of snacks covers weather or river delays. The longest stage on Lago di Sorapis is where groups feel under-fuelled first.
Can hut or hotel meals be relied on alone?
Assume most meals are carried unless a specific hut or town is confirmed on the itinerary.
What about dietary restrictions?
Label shared food in group kitchens and bring staples if vegetarian or gluten-free. Remote lodges in Italy rarely stock specialty items.
Decision checklist for Lago di Sorapis

- Confirm half-board vs self-catered nights
- Carry one spare day of calories
Before booking Lago di Sorapis
Lock non-refundable pieces — permits, key lodging, and transport into Passo Tre Croci — only after the stage plan is realistic.
Before departure, walk through food, water, navigation and shelter against the longest stage, then use the packing list builder and cost calculator as a second pass — and still verify prices and rules on official websites.
