On the Inca Trail you camp every night — operators pitch tents at designated sites. Before and after, you'll want Cusco (acclimatisation) and often Aguas Calientes (post-Machu Picchu).

On-trail camping (nights 1–3)

Included in most packages: tent, sleeping pad, dining tent, toilet tent at camps.
You bring or rent: sleeping bag rated for cold nights.
Cusco (pre-trek)
Book 2–3 nights minimum for acclimatisation before KM 82. See Rainbow Mountain accommodation for neighbourhood tips — same city, same altitude rules.
Some operators include 1 pre-trek hotel night; confirm when comparing quotes.
Aguas Calientes (post-trek)
Many itineraries end with a hotel night in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) after the site visit — useful for showers, sleep and a second site visit if your ticket allows.
What to expect at camp
- Cold nights at altitude — wear base layers to bed
- Shared toilet facilities — bring hand sanitiser
- Early lights-out before day 4 sunrise hike
