The Kahler Asten (841.9 m) is the second-highest peak in North Rhine-Westphalia and the classic summit day from Winterberg in Germany’s Sauerland. Lee hiked it in spring with his dog Joey — roughly 9 km from town via forest paths, Lenneplätze viewpoint and open Hochheide heath to the Astenturm observation tower.

Lee almost cancelled the boys' weekend when rain hammered the night before departure — then watched Joey twitching in his sleep and committed anyway. Spring Winterberg trades ski crowds for green slopes, dog-friendly guesthouses and Rothaarsteig forest walking right from the doorstep.
