What we like
- Excellent grip on steep and rocky trails
- Advanced breathability keeps feet dry
- Great support for challenging terrains
Trade-offs
- Higher price point
- Stiff sole may require break-in
I wore stiffer boots on Alta Via 1 rocky stages. Nucleo High II GTX is the hot-climate waterproof boot I recommend when hikers need ankle support and breathability on long rocky ascents.
My experience on the trail

I have not worn La Sportiva Nucleo High II GTX on a published trek — my AV1 kit used different boot classes. I have tested Nucleo boots on hot rocky day hikes and recommend them when hikers ask for waterproof boots that do not cook feet on Mediterranean or desert shoulder-season routes.
Gore-Tex Surround and Nano Cell ventilation are the technical story — 360-degree breathability uncommon in high-cut GTX boots. Vibram sole grips loose rock adequately for demanding day hikes; you still feel this is a hiking boot, not a soft trail runner on steep scree.
Trail performance

Excel on long rocky ascents where breathability prevents blister-causing sweat pools — break in on shorter hikes before committing to week-long routes. Lacing locks heel on descents; use trekking poles on steep downhills with full daypack.
Waterproofing handles stream crossings and afternoon storms in hot climates — still not a substitute for gaiters in deep snow or hours of saturated bog walking.
Who it's for

Hikers on hot climates, rocky uneven terrain, and long ascent days who refuse to choose between ankle support and breathable feet. Strong fit for Dolomite summer, canyon country shoulder season, and any route with sharp rock and sustained climbing.
Less ideal for cold wet UK weeks where maximum waterproof confidence and insulation matter more than ventilation — consider traditional GTX boots or trail shoes plus gaiters instead.
Fit and break-in
La Sportiva sizing runs European-narrow for some feet — try with hiking socks and aftermarket insoles in store. Moderate break-in compared with stiff mountaineering boots — plan a few shakedown hikes before AV1-style rocky weeks.
High ankle collar needs attention on steep side-hill — lace snugly to prevent rub points above heel.

- Premium price over Columbia Newton Ridge and Merrell Moab — justify with ventilation and rock performance
- Still a GTX boot — feet can overheat on lowland hot days compared with mesh trail shoes
- Less stiff than Salomon Quest for heavy multi-day pack hauling on scree — know your load and terrain
- Narrow fit excludes some foot shapes — try before ordering online
Bottom line
La Sportiva Nucleo High II GTX is the breathable waterproof boot I recommend for hot rocky trails — break them in, lace them carefully, and enjoy GTX confidence without traditional boot furnace feet.

Construction
Gore-Tex Surround: Waterproof barrier with open construction underfoot for heat escape — rare in high boots.
Nano Cell technology: Additional ventilation channels — noticeable on 25°C+ long ascents.
Vibram sole: High-traction compound for loose rock and wet slabs — La Sportiva heritage on technical ground.
High cut: Ankle support for rocky paths — more than Columbia Newton Ridge, less than full mountaineering plastics.
