Italy Hiking Guide | Dolomites Hut Treks & Day Hikes
Plan hiking in Italy — Alta Via 1 hut trek, Lago di Sorapis day hike, Dolomites seasons, rifugio culture and first-hand route guides.

Italy's Dolomites are the headline for most international hikers — jagged limestone spires, rifugio culture and well-waymarked long-distance trails that feel alpine without the Swiss price tag. I've hiked Alta Via 1 hut-to-hut and the steep day walk to Lago di Sorapis near Cortina; this hub links every planning guide, film and tool for those routes.
Start here if you are choosing between a multi-day hut trek and a single big day hike, then open the trek overview for stage distances, packing and ZTL driving rules around the Dolomites.

Dolomites planning rhythm
Book rifugios months ahead for Alta Via 1 in July and August. Many huts sell half-board — plan dinner and breakfast in the booking. Track autumn opening dates on the 2027 Alps booking calendar. For Sorapis, check timed parking and trail quotas near Passo Tre Croci in peak weeks; start early regardless.
Driving in the Dolomites means ZTL zones around towns like Cortina — read the getting-there notes in each trek cluster before you rent a car.
Fitness and exposure
Alta Via 1 is a moderate hut trek with long days and some exposed sections — not technical climbing, but you need steady legs and comfort on narrow paths. Sorapis is shorter but steeper, with fixed cables and exposure near the lake bowl. Compare difficulty guides before you commit.
Practical planning
Fly into Venice or Innsbruck for Dolomites access; buses and trains reach major trailheads but a car helps for Sorapis and Braies. Pack layers — afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Travel insurance should cover mountain rescue in Italy.
Use the Trek Finder to filter by destination, then open each trek's packing, cost and itinerary guides before you book transport.
