On Alta Via 1 I ran iPhone 15 + DJI Mini 4 Pro instead of a mirrorless kit. The phone handled stills, B-roll, offline maps, hut bookings and emergency contact in one device.
My experience on the trail
The iPhone 15 was my primary stills and short-form video camera on Alta Via 1 — alongside the Mini 4 Pro drone, not instead of thinking about weight. It lived in a hip belt or chest pocket for quick cliff shots, rifugio terrace clips and the moments where launching a drone would annoy everyone on a narrow ledge.
USB-C matches the power banks and hut cables I already carry, which sounds minor until you are rationing charge at a shared outlet after a long stage. Action Button can be mapped to camera for gloved morning launches when you do not want to dig through menus.
Durability and protection
A slim case and screen protector are non-negotiable on rocky trails — one slip onto Dolomite gravel pays for both. I do not trail-run with a naked glass phone in a hip pocket.
Rain is the other enemy: a zip pouch or dedicated dry bag pocket beats trusting pocket depth alone when afternoon storms roll in below a col.
Camera and content workflow
Modern iPhone sensors are good enough for social clips, trail diary stills and quick vertical content without carrying a mirrorless body. On bright alpine days shoot in HDR and bracket exposure for ridgelines — phone dynamic range still struggles when snow and shadow share a frame.
For deliberate filming I paired the phone with the drone: phone for handheld context, drone for scale. Keep a microfiber cloth in the lid pocket — fingerprint smears show up fast on summit shots.
